Yep the 472 I used to hang onto either standing on the draw bar or step was not a good place to be in reflection, The passenger seat with seatbelt is a much better place to be. Also I think if you dont introduce them young enough I dont think the get the bug enough.

The shocking thing is, I’d never let my daughter stand on the sort of bits I used to!! Quite scary when you think back!!!

Much safer in the cab than watching from outside in the cold and rain obviously time and a place to have him in there. Maybe I need to see if the car seat will fit lol.

I also used do drive around in the back of an escort van on the spare wheel.

Why would a child want to be in a tractor ?

I don’t even want to be, unfortunately it’s one of the negative aspects of arable farming

can’t wait for autonomous / swarm bot machines

On a dairy farm, it’s the part I enjoy most. I probably never grow out of the kid playing with cool toys phase! I just love machinery and technology.

Milking cows is mind numbingly boring in comparison :(

Dude, come on. Just because you dislike it doesn't mean everybody who enjoys it is wrong.
I dislike driving my car, what's the point of me going on about that it's an unfortunate part of the business. If other people like driving cars that's lovely, that way I can get out of it.

I remember standing the back axle of our 5000 ploughing with dad. I'd go to sleep stood up with my head on his shoulder and he'd have one arm round me and steer with the other. Guess we've always been pretty comfortable on a tractor. Would I do that with my kids? Erm, probably not!!! But my eldest will sit on my lap, steer the wheel and shreak with joy on a modern tractor. Of course, modern cabs are a bit different to an old 5000 with no back on the cab![emoji46]

Well I suspect I’m breaking lots of laws but have no issue having my 7 year old in the tractor with me. He’s keen to ask sensible questions and has even had a supervised go at driving on more than one occasion.

He understands what the basic controls do that start make the tractor move and more importantly how to stop it. His preferred place is passenger seat in the newest tractor as it has a more comfortable jump seat complete with seatbelt.

I also know he has eyes on the driving seat of the combine but will have to wait a few years yet before been let loose on that!

Looking back to my childhood when there no laws on this topic, I was steering a tractor on my own from about 5 years old, for example, while parent was feeding-out. He also used to start the tractor, put it in gear, jump off and leave me to steer it home on the farm-race which was up and down hill. If it had stalled on a slope, I wouldn't have known what to do.

Thinking back, there was no concept of, and utter disregard for, health and safety on the farm, and it was inevitable what happened and it had fatal consequences.
