To people that use them, where do you want them mounted? Obvious point to me seems to be in middle of windscreen just above steering wheel but not exactly convenient. But you need to be able to see lights while you are looking where to go? Any experience/opinions appreciated. thanks.

I don't really use the light bar on it but I actually prefer my black box to the right hand side of the front window so that when I'm looking at it I'm more concentrating on it than where I'm going if that makes sense . Following one and getting a straight line takes a fair but of concentration

If you are steering manually with a light bar to guide you, then straight in front of you seems a lot easier. If you have some form of auto steering, then forget about the light bar.

I have one system with auto steering and mounted the screen on the B pillar. When lining up at headlands, I ignore the light bar and just use the map image on the screen to get close enough.

With the guidance only GPS units we had, I found them very awkward to use if not mounted directly on front, but I also only ever used them if I could not see any mark at all to follow.

As you say, centre of screen, somewhere in line of sight above the end of the bonnet, so all you have to do is focus in and out of the cab because you will still be using the normal straight driving technique of looking far ahead, but referring back to lights to check the correct line.
I cannot do any good at all with the screen mounted more to hand, somwhere away to the side.
