Lamma 2020

When Smithfield died fifteen years ago I felt we’d lost more than a show in that we’d lost a bit of our ‘esprit de core’ as an industry so it’s really heartening to see an event like LAMMA at the NEC. Losing the Royal was another blow for English farming.

I went both days to LAMMA this week and felt there was a good vibe and plenty of kit. Lots of good chat on the NFU stand. A bit of a contrast to the punters at Oxford!

Felt a bit nostalgic for the Olympia ‘eau de vache’ - maybe they should spray it through the heating vents. And now I’m in my ‘respectable’ years I didn’t miss the wander up the west end.

Didn’t miss the arctic adventure of the old outdoor LAMMA either although had to note the irony that the outdoor weather while I was inside the NEC was quite benign.

But long may LAMMA at the NEC prosper and congrats to the organisers.
From talking to quite a few people we deal with I was very surprised how many and who said they aren’t going to be at Cereals this year and are going to focus on LAMMA going forward. They all seemed happy with their experience at the NEC, as was I. It was a nice way to start the year.

just hope that its not just about money for the organizers ,,, and they kill what as guy says is a promising future ,, like so many of the country shows ended up going

As long as the entry remains free then I think they are on the right lines.

It certainly seems to draw across all regions and all sectors.

I’m keen the NFU keeps a good presence there. I met a lot of grass roots members on Tuesday and Wednesday and it’s good to hear what’s on people minds even if the opening gambit fired at me always seemed to be ‘ so hows it on the driest farm in Britain then, had enough ruddy rain yet?’

I would t worry about paying £20 to get into the show, nothing is free these days, let’s face it.

think it may of been stand location ,,,, spoke another stand in the same trade as us but different location in the halls they had more foot fall first day ,, but little interaction and interest ,, 2nd day a lot less footfall but much more interest and genuine customers ,,, we was the complete opposite :scratchhead:

I’d agree with that, we had a lot more people “pass through” on Tuesday, less volume on Wednesday but better enquiry take. We’re in the middle of Hall7 opposite Deutz

Royal Welsh show at Builth Wells.
Royal Highland show at Edinburgh.
Royal Show at Stoneleigh.
I reckon you could say that the loss of any one of them would mainly be a blow to that nation's farming, even though plenty travel across borders to the other ones.
Smithfield was different.

Wouldnt it be great if orgsnisers of LAMMA, Cereals & Dairy Event could work together and one big 4-5 day show, it would be for the greater good of all the industry

...maybe call it something catchy like The Smithfield Show???

It would be really good for the industry. Unfortunately it would be really bad for the show industry so I doubt they’d go for it.

I think the royal Welsh show needs some serious rethinking there’s not much change been there
It seems that some of these events needs new blood with a fresh professional approach or there going to die on their feet there’s a massive opportunity to get farming sold to the general public at these events

I appreciate there were plenty of foreign visitors to Stoneleigh but it was put on by the RASE ( E being the key letter) and the Scots, Welsh and Ulstermen have kept their national shows in good heart which reflects badly on the English.

I never hear the Royal Highland or the Royal Welsh being described as ‘British’ even if I’ve always felt very welcome when I’ve visited. .

But enough of the petty nationalism. I’m as British as I’m English.

The royal show may have been put on by RASE, but it was a show for the whole world.
(you can take that as a compliment)
I can say that I particularly missed the royal show, as we always seemed to be too busy at highland show time, plus living only 15 miles from ingliston means that travelling away to a show is much more fun.

And from a couple of conversations, VERY easy on the plane. ;) Met a guy who had flown in from Shannon that day!

I'd question if there is anywhere better in the UK at the moment for access to a Show...
That all depends on where you're starting from.
Peterborough was much easier from here, and Newark is still better than finding a way across to Birmingham.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles??

I'll grant you, the M6 can be an absolute barsteward to negotiate at rush hour, but the NEC road access isn't too bad from the South?? ? Its from teh West that it becomes naughty...
