Well maybe the population is about to get smaller with the new Chinese virus killing a few off.

Now if this was foot and mouth every animal would be at a standstill until it was contained !

Yet thousands of Chinese are allowed to travel around the World, possibly infecting and spreading an unknown virus to every Country.

So glad I live in a fairly remote area and not squashed in a tube train everyday with sneezing and coughing Asians !!

It is a genuine threat and they are doing nothing to contain it.
UK isn’t doing anything either, apparently they might put thermal cameras at airports to try to detect people with a fever. I expect this will be after it has arrived (which it probably already has)

I am off to Australia in a few weeks, I have little concern about the bushfires but this virus bothers me.

Virologist Guan Yi of the University of Hong Kong's State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases, visited Wuhan, he says that he didn't see "nearly enough" being done to fight off the new epidemic. He said that due to the new year, people were out at markets without masks and without any "sense of the epidemic".
The city did ultimately disinfect the market where the virus was traced back to, but Guan said that this could actually hurt researchers' chances of finding out where the virus originated, warning that what we have seen so far is just the beginning
“A bigger outbreak is certain,” said Guan Yi, a virologist who helped identify severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2003.
He estimated – “conservatively,” he said – that this outbreak could be 10 times bigger than the SARS epidemic because that virus was transmitted by only a few “super spreaders” in a more defined part of the country.
“We have passed through the ‘golden period’ for prevention and control,” he told Caixin magazine from self-imposed quarantine after visiting Wuhan. “What’s more, we’ve got the holiday traffic rush and a dereliction of duty from certain officials.”
And if that wasn’t enough to send a chill down your spine, just check out what else he had to say
“I’ve seen it all: bird flu, SARS, influenza A, swine fever and the rest. But the Wuhan pneumonia makes me feel extremely powerless,” he told Caixin.
“Most of the past epidemics were controllable, but this time, I’m petrified.”
As we updated on Friday morning, 46 million people have now been quarantined and 900 have been infected with the virus. A 26th death was reported on Friday morning and two deaths have been reported outside of Wuhan. Additionally, hospitals in Wuhan have been making a desperate plea for help and supplies, as some patients showing symptoms are even being turned away from hospitals.
Just as we expected, a shortage of facemasks that inspired hoarding and price gouging in Hong Kong has now spread across Asia, according to the Japan Times.
Back in Wuhan, the center of the outbreak, conditions are deteriorating rapidly. Video purportedly showing the hospital at the center of the outbreak paints a picture of widespread misery as health care workers collapse on their feet, infection rates explode even among those responsible for treating patients. Local media has also reported that there aren't enough testing kits and medical workers available to diagnose new cases.
The next week or two will be an absolutely critical time.

My daughter, son in law and grandkids have been in China (Shanghai) since last April.
I messaged her this morning asking what the atmosphere was like locally as the uk news broadcasts were giving the situation some hype.
She said that their temperature were all being taken before they were allowed to go into the school and many more that normal were using masks.
She also said that the local attractions had been closed down and new year celebrations cancelled.

They are hopefully on a 28 day standstill !!?!

As we can vaccinate for the coronavirus in cattle, it can't be that hard to get a vaccine for humans ?
I was wondering how closely related to the cattle virus it is. I keep picturing people with scours

That is ill thoguht through - The Chinese are showing an amazing response.

They have just shut down a city the size of London. No flights, no public transport and there are currently no reports of starvation.

This is not anything like "doing nothing to contain it" this is a totalitarian country behaving in an incrediblly responsible way. Not acceptable here - but more than we could even start to do to save the World from an epidemic.

They are looking after the herd, not the individual.

I’m taking all the news reports with a large dose of salt. On the one hand, some scientists, usually pay those that are employed in working with such diseases, appear to be saying it could wipe out half the human race (a certain Prof Lacey said similar re nvCJD & BSE to further his career). On the other hand, we have western experts saying how ‘we’ are on top of it and in front of the game compared to the SARS outbreak. They will be trying to play it down to avoid widespread panic.
Somewhere between the two is likely to be the truth.

It was pointed out on the news earlier, that SARS infected 8000 people and killed 800, which sounds terrible. However, a more recent flu pandemic killed something like 800,000 worldwide, which seems almost forgotten now.

We’ll know soon enough I guess.

More people will die of measles than ncov. the news is written by people that are short of time.

Err - I don’t want to disappoint anyone, but it is incorrect to say the Chinese are doing nothing about this.
They have cracked down very tightly on this & have been very quick to inform various authorities around the world.
Much more than they did with SARS.
I think your biggest risk is your lax quarantine & inspection services at your borders - not some Chinese “conspiracy”

They weren't doing any of that when I wrote my post. They must have noted my concerns posted on here and leaped into action.
Obviously too late as it has already spread throughout the world including Europe and Australia. How many people did they come into contact on the way?
