Agree with an older retired dog, as non of mine at the moment would have worked well in a 100 sheep situation.
I can definitely understand the need for a dog however as I wouldn’t want to keep any without a dog now!

if you had a pup maybe you could do agility or some kind of other activity whilst not working sheep? Or buy a dozen training sheep and whizz around them to fill the gaps, get good at it and start sheepdogging as a hobby on the side?

Border collies are a diverse breed. Yes you have the intense need to work kind, but you also have the softer just want to be with you, and do a bit now and again kind. We lamb 150, and between my son and I we have 7 border collies. Some are purely pets, some work a couple of times a week, one retired and one so crazy to work he checks the sheep with me every day. As long as collies get regular attention and exercise they dont all need to work ďay in day out. Chain them up days on end and yes they'd get nippy as would I.

No, just a few nurseries with the mad keen one. The rest are happy with a good walk free running in a morning and a short walk and let outs the rest of the day. The ones that do work will get a few jobs each week. I know some lines of bc's would be clmbing the walls without the challenges of working, but ime some lines of farm not trials dogs are far more laid back.

It's a grand life for a dog, isn't it? Their quality of life must be so much better than pampered town pooches, dragged round the streets on the end of a lead once daily.
I’d reckon so. My dogs are dogs, not child substitutes or little furry people.

My quality of life is certainly improved by having them. I never want to be without a dog.

For field work and catching, stick to a Collie. Border is the go to, but if you'd fancy something slightly different then a Rough Collie (do you remember Lassie?) could be a good choice (there's a lass on Instagram uses them and I'm very impressed).

I've never worked a Kelpie, but from my limited experience of being around them, they're nice dogs, more of a yard dog though (I would like to have one for backing) - but they yap constantly which really gets on my nerve
Got Jack Russell of sorts here that thinks hes a Russellway that barks none stop:banghead::banghead::banghead:, not reet good at backing sheep but runs under them?? you can have him ??I'll even throw some ear muffs in?
