Work 'under way' into Scotland-Northern Ireland bridge feasibility

We haven't heard from very many NI people, or Scots or northern englanders who have family and/or do business in Northern Ireland. But I'll chip in. I'd be delighted with a bridge. I'd probably make a lot more trips to the mainland if I could drive straight across. I'd obviously spend money when I'm there too, benefiting the rest of you. I've been over that really long bridge in Denmark and seen that these things can be done.

A very appealing idea to be hardwired to GB as well. Despite all the rhetoric over uniting the two poles of Ireland, there's not much for us down south. Our gaze always has and always will lie Eastward to Bonnie Scotland and England's pleasant pastures. Oh I think I'm about to break out into 'Jerusalem'... ♥

Hi, are there any pot holes in the roads in Northern Ireland? There certainly are in parts of England. Cannot speak for the other parts of UK as do not visit. If you have pot holes just wondering whether you would like well maintained roads or a nice shiny new bridge to Scotland. Am intrigued. Apparently I am very parochial, so apologies in advance, but I am more in favour of better maintenance of what we have already.

I think that's a bit on the small-minded side. Maintaining what we've got is a bare minimum requirement of good management. Developing links is improvement and something we should strive toward if we have even a shadow of the ambition of our forefathers.

Small minded it maybe. And parochial. Maybe I just do not have the vision of others who post on this forum. Maybe Mr Johnson has truly found a grove of Magic Money trees. But if he hasn't and funds will be constrained such that there is insufficient to maintain what we have and build a shiny new bridge, then we shall in my view look very silly with a new bridge and 1000s of miles of badly surfaced roads. Hey ho. By the way how was that additional £1bn allocated / gifted to Northern Ireland in 2017 spent?

Would it really be a good idea to spend 20 billion (probably plus 5 billion overspend) to link 2 parts of the UK when there is a chance that one (or both) of those countries may not be part of the UK by the time a bridge would be finished.

Maybe best give it a while to see how things go before cranking up the mixer.
In the meantime there are plenty of other things to do if the ex EU money is burning a hole in BJ's pocket.

I like your £5bn overspend prediction. The estimated cost of HS2 has trebled.

Lithium mining is already causing huge environmental problems which is only going to get worse as demand increases
I cannot imagine the total estimated electricity requirement to power all the light vehicles on our roads but at 746 watts per horsepower hour it must be significant. Not too bad if it comes from renewables but the weather of the past few weeks cannot have been too productive. Like many people I have a blind faith in human resourcefulness but sadly little faith in the ability to put it to good use.

Give it another ten years and they will have figured out that mining the minerals for all those batteries and disposing of used batteries is harming the environment more than exhaust emissions.
Ah but y'see, the great magic of li ion batteries is that they can be recycled, just as soon as somebody works out how to do it economically without adding greatly to the already extensive carbon footprint of EVs. It will all be sorted by Thursday next according to the EV fans but they said that last week, and the week before, and the week before that.......

Not annoyed, amused. (y) Are you a British tax-payer? I don't need to justify spending money on strengthening links across the Union, it's worth is self-evident, unless you're a wannabe Frenchman who's sulking like hell because of Brexit, and always will be.... :ROFLMAO:

I heard Boris being interviewed about immigration last year and he stated - several times - that immigration can be good, provided we choose who the immigrants are. That's what most people think too, it's common sense and you know it; but, being a whinging lefty, you just don't like it. :)
In the interim he seems to have firmed that view up a bit!! Squeezing schools, rubbish internet and spiralling student debt are all barriers to people in our area acquiring the skills that Johnson wishes to import from abroad. All those areas should be address before any tax cuts for billionaires or spending on feasibility studies on pie in the sky bridges. In your eyes pointing this out makes me a "whinging lefty", however you cannot expect your political opponents to shut up and go away, especially if your own party is so hell bent on not providing common sense solutions to our (the UK's) problems.

No. I think you being too daft to admit when left-wing dogma is patently wrong and constantly trying to pin the blame for everything on those who have been economically successful makes you a whinging lefty. (y)

Out of interest, because it's relevant, are you a tenant or freehold arable farmer?

What difference does that make? You, as ever, are full of wind.

How many of you would be prepared to drive over a 20 mile bridge over the Irish Sea?

Bloody hell.
?
A valid point, a lot won't want to use it.

A lorry driving friend said that quite a few of his mates don't take trips that mean going over the Oresund Bridge and it's only a fraction of that length.

But then again some people won't get on a ferry.
