Selling lambs deadweight, how does it work?

Good prices, not for me as the breeds a bit unusual, they have their balls and I want to know a) they are going to be killed and b) where they are going to be killed. I personally couldn't have my lambs ending up at a non-stun place.

@Tim W I will be in touch if that's an offer ??

@lloyd you are right, but change of business focus, firstly we have a lot more lambs this year than previous due to expansion but long term we're going to focus on breeding animals for sale now built the numbers of pure bred up ? can sell them via boxes but if I can recoup similar without the added work entailed then happy days.
Barbados Black Belly?

either sell deadweight or stick to the box scheme - @Tim W should be able to find a home for them!

I want to sell deadweight! But everyone is saying will get torn a new one. I can't really understand it as the carcasses will be 18/19kg average. But perhaps absolutely smashed on the grid?

I don't understand it. Seems a shame when the eating quality is superb. But if it's a big dock because of how they look even when hanging then will just put them through boxes, just trying to simplify things for myself.

Yes they are BBB crosses.

once their dead their dead....most people I know sell on various grids depending on what breed the animals are, bonus grids the E/U type lambs go, plainer types and hill breeds go base price grids so less/no deductions for O’s and overweight’s but there’s then no bonus’s on good lambs..

You surely know a few larger sellers in your area, ask them for the number of a fieldsman they respect/trust and ask said fieldsman to go through them. It would be a poor fieldsman to not find a home for any stock, all of these slaughterhouses all have contracts for smaller/bigger out of spec lambs, I sent a pile of 25kg ewe lambs last week, as long as they know ahead they can find a home for them. Where Tim W sends his would be a good place to send (y)

Super thanks, will make a few calls on Monday. Sounds like getting a fieldsman to farm is the way and he can assess them. Many thanks ?

I’m not sure how it’s done down your way but I take it you know Tim W? I’m sure between a few phone calls it wouldn’t take long for them to be sorted out (y) Definitely go dead with them though unless you know someone who pays flat rate live ppk regardless of how they look.

Farmers fresh do, with no deductions for not being FA

Am I right in thinking they aren’t to concerned about where the lambs sit on the standard EUROP grid either, which would surely make them the outlet of choice for the OP’s lambs?

@GreenerGrass , if you are planning on increased lamb sales in the future, and looking to sell to mainstream markets (either dw or lw), can I suggest you might be better to look at more conventional breeding, and possibly attend a ‘live to dead’ session run by AHDB to see what those markets are looking for? With all due respect, a Barbados Black Belly, whatever it’s attraction is for you, is only ever going to be a niche product with a limited value on the open market.

Would be well interested in trying. How would you say they differ to anything else?

F Fresh pay the base for O's and R's, but they don't like fat, think they dock 15p/kg for 3h's, do pay bonus for U and E grades, but they do grade hard we hardly ever had a U and never had an E.
Took a couple hundred to Merthyr last year and had a lot of U grades and quite a few E s
