Just heard that you'll not be allowed to burn this on open fires or stoves from next year, they could do with getting rid of those hellish buses for a start, at least there not banning stoves all together, not yet anyways.

Hardly revolutionary, similar legislation came into being in the 1956 Clean Air Act in response to the many deaths from London smogs.

So the ban is on the sale of the stuff .......... what happens if you don't "sell" it? Let's say that you are a coal merchant - you could give a bag of coal to a household and at the same time sell them a tin of beans for £10 or whatever the coal costs

Processed coal ovals are OK, with kilm dried wood, a shovel full of that and six or seven logs and the fire burns away lovely.

An unenforceable law to completely disregard?

It’s quite sad actually. I get the impression that Brits used to be very law abiding. My grandfather was devastated when he got a parking ticket. When they bring in this kind of thing my reaction is ‘Fudge you then I’ll do what I bloody want.’

It's the EU and government pishing about with air pollution laws whilst air travel and shipping are basically left alone. Meanwhile they burn coal in Germany in powerstations like it is going out of fashion.

It's a complete joke.

What about those people who only had solid fuel boilers/heating systems in their houses? My neighbour buys and burns about 3 tonne of coal a winter to heat his house, no central heating system. What do you propose he does instead?

Wood has to be under 20% moisture content, but logs are exempt if sold in volumes greater than 2m3 & a lot of folk store them outside anyway!

As for coal, smokeless will still be permitted subject to sulphur content - it is only bituminous/unprocessed coal being banned.
