Often find that behaviour like that is due to an imminent change in the weather, not always for the better ? we have a lot of snow forecast this weekend ?

hope your cow Pulls through.
She not looking good at all, her spine has been crushed/ damaged, she went down next to concrete feed bunker and i think stood on by other cows. Vet seen her first thing. Fallen stock on the way. ?

It sounds sh!t but I find very few cows that can’t get up or atleast try straight away have any hope.
Up until this year I would have agreed with you. I have carried 3 cows out this winter and saved them all. One had a spine damage and was down for over a week then progressed on to shuffling around on her knees and got up and is back in with the milkers to fatten. The other 2 both had ecoli. One was so bad she was scouring blood. Tubed twice with aggers restore and 40 litres of water and both are back with milkers. I think they have died or I have shot every other downer cow I have had the last few years. Patience, TLC, metacam and electrolyte fluids definitely help.

It’s quite simple just work out your milk per cow per year. If you reduce your calving index it will go up if you increase it will go down.
extended lacs, esp hols, will reduce number of dairy bulls born, sexed won't help, but if you cannot find a mkt for db's, and may either have to keep them, or pay someone to take and rear them, it will have an effect on the above.
Dropping of cattle at mkt yesterday, some massive hol steers next to me !

the 1 big fault with xbreds, over hols, if they go down, hols don't seem to try as hard to get up, and therefore easier to cope with. Xbreds will try and try, struggle, make the whole job harder, or more likely to go wrong. plus side they don't go down like the hols.

No worries it’s proper lush to watch them run about without a cough to be heard ?

would you be able to take some more pictures of the shed please? Pneumonia has nearly ruined us last autumn and we’ve a fair idea why in that the shed was just way too open but I can see where we will end up if I close it down to much.
would you also be willing to share where you got it from and a guide figure?

We’ve got on really well in an open drafty shed by making hurdles from stock board to partition the pens, wind goes over the top so the shed is still well ventilated and chilly to work in but if you get down behind the stock boards it’s really pleasant and calves do much better.
