Farmers are very generous folk, they often hide bits of unwanted farm machinery just so other people may 'find' them, causing much joy!
had that many years ago, like you do someone asked me to cut a field for hay, i asked anything in the field i should know about, no, first run round the field with my nearly new KM22 mower and i went right over a trailed set of harrows, slightly bent frame holder, taught me a lesson dont cut anyones elses fields ?

Found this sticking inside my now flat feeder wagon tyre, presume it’s come in with bought in beet. Less than ideal.

That fancy chain in the pic is the chain that goes over the back of a cart horse. Sits in the channel of the saddle and fastened to the shafts each side.
Good example of a farmer repurposing as you wouldn't use them on chain harrows.

Once found a huge piece of checker plate in a muck spreader. Was easily 3ft by 3ft and quite thick, took two people to get it up and over the side of the spreader. Fudge knows how it got in the dung.
I once mowed over a set of chain harrows..........but I’d left them there!

Hi, Im intrigued with your reply, this farm did use horses many years ago, so I am not sure if they were pulled by a horse or a tractor!
I like the forged twisted shackle.
Years ago I had to go with a 360 digger to unload a muck spreader that was broken due to a cubicle gate jammed in it, this was out of a midden that had been moved twice, how nobody had seen it is beyond me !
That was a chamber cover, you'd think it would have been missed?

How Thoughtful, interesting and it does happen we've all seen it at times, if we lose tools etc they end up grown in quite rapidly ...

Many years ago got a brand-new John Deere 3140 and a brand-new mower conditioner first day out , Dealer came out Helped to set it up ,Also the farmer was in the field ,.starting to scratch his head Then he said I’ve left my chain Harrow in this field so the three of us walked up and down his field trying to find them did not find them ,so all okay , cut 8 acre field ,went into the next field second belt round Guess what ! ! Straight over the top of them .got the wrong field Burst all the tyres Had to have new tyres on tractor And The mower Conditioner Totally written off good job the dealer was still with me he said do not worry there’s another one in the yard which you can have in two hours and I did .

Best picture I can find to illustrate it, the chain sits in the groove in the saddle. But even if the harrows were pulled by a horse he wouldn't be using that harness as it is for shaft work. He'd use chain harness to drag harrows or ploughs etc.
I was sent to harrow a field many years ago, hadn't done it before so asked what speed to go. Same speed as a horse walks" was the answer, "that is what they were made for."

We inherited a huge pile of yard muck with some short term rented land, dad set one of the men on spreading it, ended up with a stone gate post jammed in the rotorspreader, and goodness knows how much sisal bale band. Only done about three loads, decided to leave the rest of it there for the next tenant to worry about.
