Winter wheat yields

I have a 5 acre field like that which I snuck in with ww as a third cereal when we were desperate to drill anything in the autumn. The first wheat in the field next door looks like 7t/ha is possible, stark reminder of the importance of rooting. A lot of my soil looks quite nice but I think it has more sand and gravel underneath than some of the Breckland stuff not so far away. :(

Your right it’s all about rooting. This is the worst year for lack of roots that I can remember with such short stunted crops now unable to access water and nutrients.
Interestingly the adjacent field also has areas like in the pic but last year did 4 t/a of wheat over a weigh bridge, this year we will be very lucky to get half that!!

So what are you thinking price wise.sitting around 160 at the moment
Nick...

I think milking premiums will be modest (low yield high N into protein) + lots of spring wheat

a lot depends on how big the feedgrains shortage is in the uk. And I think the barley price is important in determining wheat prices in this way. I would expect £30-40 discount to remain in place , but also expect basis between futures and physical to increase - so you could have liffe Nov 20 at £180 for example but a physical spot price of £192 .

somebody had mentioned yesterday that it costs £30/inch/acre?
Currenlly putting on 15mm, and it's using about 15 litres of diesel per acre. So 1 litre per mm. So an inch would be 24 litres of diesel @ £0.40, about £10 per acre inch in fuel.

Cost of water/licence about £4 per acre inch. Repairs and maintenance can be lucky or not, so somewhere between zero and £10 an acre inch.

Haven't costed labour in, because I'm not doing much else at this time of year. Was supposed to be on holiday, but now obviously cancelled. In fact I'm saving money by irrigating and not going on holiday ;)

In my case, kit was bought and paid for in 1994.

0.6mm here taking May to 2.8mm. I don’t think we are actually quite as dry as we were in 2018 or 2019 at this point. But crops getting very blue/grey and spiky on thirstier soils.

im not going near the 20 acre of ww that was sown in feb until we get 2inch of rain ,its there almost in full rows some better areas than others but after 9weeks of going from there is a crop -there isnt a crop - its germinated - its capped -lets leave it a few days rain forecast -are we knocking it up to -it s rained a bit its perking up- f it it needs spraying-now its too late ,ive decided its best left on its own as its only causing me angst and I cant decide if I was right to leave it, or shouldnt have drilled it,or should have waited till end april or should have been fallowed or stitch some sheep /lamb keep into it , fortunately the rest seems to be rallying
I have a field like that. Luckily it's only one and all of the other cereals look ok. Can't say the same for the OSR gates shut on that now till dessication. I certainly won't have to worry about getting over the crop to do it.

its now about a fortnight later than my original post about said crop, its grown an inch or two though to be fair its starting to cover the ground on about 4/5of the field , weve applied some old chem fungicide and a bit of homebrew foliar feed just desperate for some proper rain ,interestingly cut some stems open and there is a seed head in there just hoping its vernalised reckon if it gets to harvest and combined will be a minor miracle and minor being the operative word re yield, having said that the other ww is now improving in looks as seems to have found some moisture and responding to the N and feed

6t/ha now ww
2t/ha spring wheat
Grass is poor 1st cut 8.2t/ha last week.
last couple of days first cut grass 30 acre new seeds 1/2 yr ley plus 14 acre pp nothing between the 2 of them both 24 hour wilt spread rowed up clamped a smidge over 8t / acre which is 2/3rds of the longer term average for the ley but the pp has done within 10% of usual.
Just been in the orchard and the 2 pear trees one the smaller type and the other the conference type are laden with forming fruits which in past years has always been an indication of decent ww yields this year looks like testing that theory the damsons have little setting fruit which is a downer so im thinking the early sown wheats will perform better than some think the rest will be crap and id better ration the last couple of bottles of damson gin
