Just read it and I agree, poor old FE teaches about half the UK's young people and is given a fraction of the resources universities are, maybe that could have something to do with the fact that all our MPs went to universities, I wonder how many started life like me on a YOPs (youth opportunities programme) scheme!

Unusually, for an article in the Daily Mail, I find myself agreeing with the excellent analysis Humphrys gives ?

I could write a whole book on this, but I have to agree with almost everything Humphrys says. It was always going to happen, as the UK has always followed the US in these areas. But from the early 90's there was a lot of lowering of standards both in admissions and finals. For example, in my department up to the end of the 80's you had to be truly exceptional to get a "first" and many years none were awarded. Then VC instructed department that this had to change, as is bad for the HE league tables. From there on, over half a dozen were awarded each year despite the intake falling to half what it previously was.

Another mistake was the abandoning of the CNAA which held the degree awarding powers for all the old polytechnics until they turned into universities. Rather than abandon this institution, it's controls should have been forced on all the universities allowing a universal high standard to be maintained.

A great article, find it difficult to say considering its out of the mail ! My sister in law and her husband are prime examples of the blair years uni policy, both in their mid 30s still with a mass of student debt, a large mortgage and public sector jobs unlike my cousin who left school at 16 trained as a plumber earns more than they do put together and by his admission could hardly read or write when he finished school ! Who's the daft one ?

The lad who skived off school at 15 to help in his dads roofing firm has done better than anybody round here. He was even involved in reroofing the school itself. He was outside busy on the scaffolding while we were stuck inside listening to stubbsy droning on about Ancient Greece. The teachers couldn’t deal with him in the school so they weren’t bothered if he was getting on alright outside. “Education” is another of these overrated sacred cows much used by politicians. Truth be told schooling is largely stated funded childcare and a behaviour remedial service nowadays. It’s a very slow and inefficient way of learning anything useful.

Humphrys is just another journalistic parasite , theres is plenty of them  earning a lot of money from unproductive talk.
why do we need journalists now there is information technology?

Universities provide employment , research opportunities and good earning jobs.

It’s very true about grants for absolutely pointless research. Oxford university are a prime example and often at odds with our very own industry, but the media love to quote them.

Well, it's an analogy I suppose, but a bit black and white. :scratchhead:
I guess, its Based on my experience of both.

university education is one of the forum things to bash, :sneaky:

Not that I went to university (can you tell :) ) but my children have its it's been very good and productive experience for them.

Best jounalist I remember or like / found interesting, would be Alan Whicker..

I think it is a balanced argument, I went to ag uni and paid off my debts although not that big. I think the argument isn’t against anyone getting a degree but it is to easy in a lot of instances and can be worthless in the real world. There is also shortage of labour for the so called unskilled jobs. Too many places offered has probably bred a part generation Of highly qualified but not very practical thinkers.

I wouldn't call all jobs unskilled, as many are often trades, requiring long and skilled apprenticeships. But too many jobs nowadays seem require unnecessary degrees or excessive levels of paper qualifications that prevent or deter often very able people from even trying to apply .

That is what the media like to call them though even as they often need key skills. I think the problem is a lot of students think they are to good or above doing a trade or something similar.

The best maths teacher who taught when I was at secondary school 76 to 83 was trained at Huddersfield tech
The worst at Cambridge university.

I think to be a really good teacher its best not to be so clever, that you realise some (most) have to be taught.
