What kind of horse power do you reckon 150?

dunno, depends on your circumstances.

We’ve run case puma 155, nh tm150, 140, 155 and 7030 all to around 10,000hrs with not a lot of love and they’ve been cheap to run, easy to drive, good on diesel. 7030 a bit hard sprung. None of the engines or gearboxes been opened. Sure there’s comfier, faster, flashier options but the I think the Basildon built nh machines are solid.

Bit of a broad subject this but I’m going to ask anyway.

I’ve recently got a hold of 10ah of land that I’m planning on taking hay from. All for my horses and maybe to sell a few and was looking at a tractor that could handle the work load.
A few day ago I’ve found out there is work lifting potato’s and head cutting work around so was thinking of taking that on as well

Question is what horsepower tractor could do all the jobs?

I was thinking a JD6930 type of tractor
( no I’m not a JD purist and will consider other brands )

Any ideas

Thanks

MF135 would do all the hay work. I’ve lifted spuds behind a MF230 too. We don’t have many hedges up here so no idea on that. All depends what size of gear you’re planning on pulling.

That what I’m looking for a good solid tractor with enough power for potato drawing hedge cutting and maybe bailing

I think I’m going to run a different tractor for the hay cutting tending and bailing. For 10ah a litre massy would be grand. Then look at something bigger for the hedge cutting and potato pulling.

MF 135 fine for the haymakjng. £5k max
I’d buy an old Renault for higher horsepower. Reliable old buses that pull like a train. £10k would get a decent one. But if you are going to pull your neighbours potato harvester check what it needs up front. The 135 would pull a single row hoover. But you’d need maybe 200 hp for a large multi row harvester. How long is a piece of string?
Hedge cutting depends on the reach of the hedge cutter. Could need anything from MF 565 upwards. The more reach, the heavier the tractor you need to balance it for stability. The head itself only takes a few horsepower.

100hp is ample tractor for what you’re doing. Something like a Case MX110 would be absolutely fine for everything.

What is the obsession with horsepower that everyone has? 20years ago I worked for Velcourt and we had 135hp on 16 and 18ton grain carts, 110hp hi e tractor specifically for carting potatoes and 150hp on a set of Simba heavy discs and a trailed double press hooked on the back.

More horses = more diesel = more money spent for the same production which = less money in the bank.

I’ll take cash over willy waving any day.

If you can find a nice 6930 with sensible hours (8000 is enough) then go for it. Will tackle almost every job with power and comfort. Just get/pay an expert to check it out for you.
gearbox failure in any modern tractor can cost £10k to sort and the powerquad box is one of the most reliable..

Just check what maintenance its had ie
Injectors, head gasket, turbo, egr, wear on the front suspension, rear cross shafts ,brakes
and a few other things .
Great tractor though!

t6080 or a tidy tm if you can find one. Be my suggestion.

Avoid electric spools etc

You’d find something decent for between 25 and 30.
