Micro Abattoir

Throughput, speed and plant efficiency is needed to make an abattoir viable in the longterm.

Unfortunately many small abattoirs are just too small to adapt, many are still dressing beasts on cradles, things haven't changed since 1950, their hourly labour cost per animal must be astronomical.

Howrver, small abattoirs are desperately needed, there is no disputing that.
offering a service that is what customers want and will pay for is what will make an abattoir viable

This has been lacking, the small abattoir closure numbers are available on Google.

Eastern European slaughtermen have left by the thousand since Brexit. The larger abattoirs have been targeting slaughtermen from small abattoirs to make up the shortfall, that is another nail in the coffin.

Yes, shortening the supply chain will put more money in farmers' pockets and reduce the carbon footprint of the meat. I think there's general agreement that more small abattoirs would be a good thing but who's going to build them??

Lincolnshire has a small unused abattoir at Skegness, it had a fire a year or 2 ago. The site is owned by the Ellis family. If could be resurrected with the right management team I am sure it would help. It used to slaughter and market under the Lincolnshire Quality meat banner. I have neither the knowledge nor the finance to do it. But I would love to see it succeed. It would be good for the county breeds like the Lincoln Longwool and Lincoln Red. @DrWazzock @yellowbelly @JP1

The death knell was when an EU directive on slaughter houses came out.
It was 4 A4 pages. By the time our useless civil servants processed it out of London it was 96 pages long. Man I knew with slaughter house asked me to help him as he reckoned he could do lots of things in there but not kill any cattle, sheep or pigs. Early days of internet search but I came up with the directive. Told him that any time they came quoting rubbish just give them a copy and tell them to bog off or I will see you in the EHCR in Brussels.
The same thing happened with trailers if you remember, what was stamped on the side was what you were carrying. It was a guy from Northumberland who threatened them with the same ECHR at a cost of a couple of million to VOSA.
His father was driving a 2.5t rated truck with an empty 3.5t trailer towed behind and was given a ticket.
Six weeks later that ruling was removed from their website so anybody who got fined and that includes a lot of caravan owners should start a class action against VOSA.
You might not like Cummings but his threat to drain the civil service swamp is just what we need. The Humphreys gilding the lily is why we got Brexit.

We had a lovely Spanish vet at our abattoir around 20 years ago. Although we disagreed about many things on a daily basis :ROFLMAO: we became good friends and got on well on a personal level.

He told me that he was receiving constant racial abuse from slaughtermen in smaller abattoirs. They were blaming Europe for the bureaucracy. His reply to the abuse was that yes indeed he was Spanish, but he was working in accordance to English law. They should swear at the politicians not him.

We have a tendency in this country to interpret legislation in a far more strict manner, once compared to other European countries. Hence the closure of so many abattoirs.
