How long have you had it? How much work do you do with it?

Nothing wrong with those old handpieces. I use the one dad bought 51 years ago for all my shearing... I'd love a new handpiece but can't justify it when the old one works so well
When I learnt to shear I was bought a new hand piece. I did a day with it and went back too the old lister, the grip is so smooth and comfortable too use I'm sticking with it until it dies on me!! ?

OK....can't see the point in putting it back together TBH...it didn't cut before so what are it's chances after i've 'tinkered' ? .....i think @Cvx1170 may be on to something with the chicken feet....they are worn...one pin worse than the other....but i guess not knowing the type getting replacements is nigh impossible:scratchhead:

think i'm gonna buy new horner suregrip and be done with it:scratchhead:

Part ex the old one in then. Might get £20 for it in bits ?.
It would go back together ok, you just changed the setting of the fulcrum post after an unknown amount of use. Easy to swap fulcrom pin for a new one. There's many thousands of sheep left in that handpiece?.

It's a sunbeam/super shear handpiece. The model isn't that important the internal bits are pretty much all the same.

The cost of new ones especially Horner (beyuan) type aren't dear really and should see your shepherding days out if kept oiled and not used as a hammer. Get an oil bath one for simple maintenance.

Send it to me and I'll add it to the collection.

I wish I'd seen this thread in 'real time' as it was unfolding - I've just read through it and, if it's not 'Thread of the Month', there's no justice in the world.

What! White flag!!!!! . . . Never surrender! Give it a go, you've got nothing to lose by the sounds of it. Otherwise it's a sad end to this saga!

And If you buy a new handpiece, remember prise out and throw away the little plastic grommet they put in the top hole, else after a short period of use it will end up inside

Oh for F**king hell!!!! Do you realise what you'd done???

You just know if he buys new, he will take out the fork and Fulcrum Post to put a screwdriver up inside to pop it out now and he will be back to square 1 but with a new handpiece :banghead: :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I bought my sunbeam suregrip new in the mid eighties and he has never been took apart, I wouldn't say hes been over used mind but of course oiled frequently which is partof the job goes without saying.
He actually vibrated fairly well from new , some vibration can come from flexidrive shafts tho it's worth noting.
Cutters and combs need sharpening possibly after as little as half a dozen sheep if they are hard going or takes a long time relativly speaking, no one really tells you that...cutters and combs as well not just cutters changed.
Take some trouble over adding tension as well , learn how much, get the feel of what it needs until it gets blunt, and dont go beyond that, else he will deff. Get hot, then the sheep get more restless.
If you have to take them to someone else for sharpening, you will need a lot of them to keep going for awhile iyswim, unavoidable really unless you can sharpen them yourself.

Ive said it before but Mains machine is better if your near 24ov as well, 2nd hand checked over by electrician three speed lister or
nexus on set on the middle speed would be ideal right from the start no faffng with batteries ..... Just use a breaker.

oil back end better for less use than the bearing. back end models
like the older sunbeams and the newer listers
like heiniger. combs and cutter not so fussed on handpeices tho a bit fussy on the grinding

Maybe I'm wrong but I would say symptoms of a worn out handpiece would be more rattling and noise and vibration, not heat and poor cutting.

If the Fulcrum Post is worn out (which we can all see after @spin cycle pulled it out of the handpiece :banghead: :ROFLMAO: his is fine with no wear) it won't apply the correct tension onto the cutters. If it's wrong they won't cut worth a damn and you'll over tighten to compensate, creating more friction generating greater heat.

Rattling, it depends where it comes from - if its at the front, the tension/cup/post are worn. If its at the back it's the teeth on the cogs or the back joint is worn/slack. Or it could be a bearing (on a handpiece with bearings).

If you've got £10 to spare. Sign up to the Lojik shearing app for a month. A lot of good little tricks that may improve your knowledge. Worth it for any body wanting to get better. Cancel the subscription before month end or once you've finished the season or watched all the clips.
Ha ga if you quiet your welcome to come and help me finish mine only 120 ish left!

when I first got my kit I got a recon hand piece from Horner, it looked like yours, a bit of a festering old turd, not to say it would not have worked perfect but I rang them up and the took it back and I swapped it for a new sure grip the difference in price seemed worth itvs the second hand one.

as other have said new combs and cutters never seem just as sharp as ones that you get resharpened, then you may end up tightening them up more than you should and you just end up with a hot hand piece and jumpy sheep.
