Tipping Trailer Rams

Aye-up,

I’ve got an NC 10t tipping trailer, about 10 years old, barely used, still has paint on the floor, lovely thing.

When I tipped it with my old JD 3350 last week there was a weep from one of the rams. Note to have a look.

A friend has asked to borrow it, he hooked it onto his Case Puma 165 and oil absolutely poured out of it. Didn’t seem under pressure, but both rams pouring on each stage. Being a modern tractor it pushed it up in about seconds, at which point all the oil stopped leaking. Not a drop.

We dropped it down and all seemed good. Tried it again, oil poured out until it hit the top and then it stopped. Next time up, dry as a bone all the way and no leaking at the top. Fourth time, absolutely pouring again. He hooked it off and went home!!!

What’s causing that then? The seals aren’t buggered because once right up, spool valve engaged and engine revs on, under good pressure, the leaks stop immediately.

Cheers, Pete.

My one silage barrow was the same, The seals go hard and lose there flex with age so the lip doesn't seal while lifting an empty body. But when it hits to top the oil has nowhere to go so the extra pressure forces the lip out against the tube giving it no other option but to seal.

New seals, that's my take on it anyway

Oil is getting behind the seals when it’s down quite common not too bad to get resealed at any hydraulic place.
Used to tie a hessian on some trailers at one place I was at!!
