New season lamb too expensive (for butcher)

Earlier at the butcher the lady in front asked for new season
lamb , the butcher's reply was it is far too expensive for him to buy at present and he would struggle to make any profit

Lamb is seen as expensive in the context of a household food budget. Even though we produce it, now that we don't do freezer lambs, I can rarely afford to put it on the shopping list.

I'm putting them into my local butcher and in a normal year he struggled to sell one a week he is currently on 4/6 a week because people are shopping in the village shops and not the supermarkets

The butcher has a customer standing in front of him who is asking specifically for Spring lamb, and British Spring lamb, to boot ... and he tells her he can't make a profit on his buying price?



That's a potential customer lost, and all of her referrals and recommendations ...

taken as read in the op, the customer is not quibbling the price, just asking for something which hes reluctant to supply therefore not giving the customer what they want.

missed oportunity at best it seemss , backwards thinking at worst

Didn't the butcher offer to take her order in advance, and work up enough orders from interested parties to get in half a carcass?

if he couldnt sell a whole lamb he couldnt be trying very hard, ive never seen a butchers with out the full compliment beef pork and lamb.

We used to, and sold boxed lamb to others but brother in law runs the sheep enterprise and he is so disorganised he was selling the ones at market that I had booked into the abattoir.

Why didn’t he say that he sold out and was getting more in with his next delivery. Take an order if they wanted. They may have had seen recipes for new season lamb on tv. If he got at least 1 a week I doubt he would lose any money. customers who pay for premium products will normally return. They most probably went to a butcher who supplied and will use them again.

Clearly not a butcher in our town. They wouldn’t dream of not buying spring lambs, and will happily crank up the price to accommodate it.

Are you sure it wasn’t one of those butchers in markets selling over tannoys out of lorries

As a butcher once said to me when I mentioned the price of lambs....there are 52 weeks in a year...
If it’s too expensive now then it won’t be later on when lambs are £70/80
He should just average it out like farmers have to

My used to be local butcher I supported for a time but after learning more and questioning there was little difference in buying from a supermarket. We have a butcher who rents space in our store again most is bought in layed on plastic grass and the unsuspecting public lap it up. I’m talking even pre packaged sausages the same packs destined for canteens and schools. Chicken is bought from our chillers depackaged and sold for a margin more, The guy has all the gear but it’s more profitable to work this way.i found an incredible butcher that was 20 minutes from me now 1.5 hours so not all are on the same level. So the moral to my ramblings is not all butchers are as you would imagine

Name and shame the butcher! I supply a small local abattoir every week which he then supplies to local butchers. He’s taking twice as many lambs from me this year than normal as people try to avoid supermarkets. Might go up even more now the weathers broken.

Mmm, but then it is our business. Some of us sell direct like this butcher, others sell to the likes of this butcher and dont like to see missed opportunities.
