As we can see from BLM etc times have changed. I know a journalist from the Toon and there are lots of things that get reviewed by the eagles and suppressed or thrown out for the very reason they might get sued.
Just noticed - steered by your choice of words - that you are in Scotland, defamation law differs there.

I know a broadsheet editor and a couple who write advices for the papers when asked, as well as having a passing interest in the subject myself. Of course some things are never goers, but a hell of a lot that a layman might suppose wouldn't, do make it into print / broadcast.

As I wrote, if the grounds are reasonable it can be published; if they're wrong a prominent retraction will usual be sufficient down here, sometimes more. The brakes will only really be applied when it's a very serious allegation and the 'evidence' is thin. Which is as it should be.

The thing the papers have on their side is that... as we all know, you can be bl**dy well certain of something, but without having absolute proof. No good for a prosecution in the Courts, but perfectly sufficient for someone who has done something wrong, not to want to have the matter made the subject of either a long and drawn out investigation, or a Court case. Sometimes this is the only 'justice' wronged people will get.

It's not just council farms, I've lost count of the number of bits of land, contract farming agreements we've went for. Anyone could have predicted who would get them before the whole process started. As has been said before, it's just to set a rent.

It's just part of life as a tenant farmer in my opinion, no point getting upset about it.

There was an interesting piece in Private Eye a month or so ago about corrupt letting of a county council farm but I can't recall which eastern county. The farm had a huge old farmhouse and was "competitively" let to a senior council officer who then sub let all the land to a neighbour and just occupied the house!
It may well have been Cambridgeshire, they let a holding to the deputy leader of the council who is setting up a dog spa business. The entire holding extends to 7 acres. Seemingly no one realised the connection until they subsequently agreed to spend funds extending the house. There was then an unsuccesful applicant for the tenancy who made a statement that he had wanted it for a sheep farm. I'm not at all sure that 7 acres only one mile from the city boundary is likely to work for sheep farming, especially in an area where there is very little grass to rent.

Right, that's the one. Why would a council own a farm only 7 acres? Surely it'd only be viable for horticulture?

I have annual agreements running for thirty years.
Conacre , sometimes theres a lot to be said for it at least you can crash the price if the market falls. Getting tied in to high rents at todays see saw grain prices can seriously fucck you over . Of course if landowners and agents took a realistic long term view it could work for everybody now what was that called ah yes an aha tensncy. Dream on !!!

My cousin in laws dad was on North Yorkshire county council or somewhere near there and he managed to get the tenancy of a county council farm. But eventually something went pear shaped and they lost it.
I thought to myself at the time ( about 40 years ago) that it was some brass neck to swing that, but they managed it for a good while.

It was done in plain sight. I don’t think any wrong doing has been proven yet but I might have missed it.

Most Cambridgeshire County farms used to be around 100 acres, but they have been steadily amalgamating them to increase the holding size, they then usually sell off the spare farm house and buildings. Land is usually only sold off if it has building permission. They wouldn't normally sell off anything where this one is unless they were getting building price as they look long term especially only the Cambridge fringe. They do let small units such as this one for horticulture, or other ruralish enterprises, I doubt anything at Girton would be that great for horticulture as its heavy clay land. It may well have lost land to another nearby holding.

Had a similar experience here in Surrey a farm the council wanted to sell off come on the market, lots of the locals kicked up a fuss to keep it as a farm. So they put it out for tender quite a few people went for it, including myself, despite some quite strict rules of what you could or couldn’t do there, one of which was no partnerships and whoever took on the tenancy had to live on the farm. They then gave the tenancy to the local wildlife trust in partnership with another charity.
12 years on the farm is still empty and overgrown, with all the buildings just falling down. Complete waste.

Just to bring this back up again a friend who was second in line to get a farm has had an email confirming alledged envolope of cash was paid and someone in council has been sacked and another removed from his job.my mother heard it on local radio today.corrupt buggers.
