Range Rover 50th Aniversary

People calling cars reliable when they haven't done even 120k miles. ?‍♂️ Truth is, that every car should be easily able to do 100k miles with basic service and swapping wearing parts. 200k miles is a pretty good mark for a car to earn the "reliable" status.

RR is just too expensive. I'd rather have a Mercedes and have more reliable miles, less depreciation and less visits to the dealers workshop. I'd never own a RR out of warranty, but Mercedes i would.

No our RRV’s were all owned and run to about 100k miles, then went onto contract hirewhen the costs looked right, gone back to buying now interest rates are so low.

Well my disco 3 is at 177k miles but has had the T/C refurbed at £400 and engine repair after cam chain tensioner failed £1500 . The later would not of happened had I serviced it at main stealers as there was an update on the tensioner that never got done .
I am also on my second 2nd hand RRS , neither of which have given any mechanical issues over 80k miles , previous to the RRS we had audi's 1st one needed a complete new gearbox at 8k just out of warranty, with no good will offered , managed to trade it in for another Audi, this one spat an injector out but luckily was within warranty , when warranty expired traded again for another Audi which had the engine rebuilt 3 times in 8 weeks as they couldn't get it right , the valves kept hitting the pistons !
So I think Land rover is just as reliable or unreliable as any premium car , the more complex something is the more it will go wrong . Plus the RRS was 1st for least depreciating car https://www.autocar.co.uk/slideshow/what-are-least-worst-depreciating-cars#10 which is probably the biggest cost to ownership . So while Land rovers are certainly not cheap cars to run there are no worse than others and easily one of the nicest to drive with the bonus of supporting British Manufacturing

What’s odd is my fist vogue was one of the first of the current shape - i did 60k miles over 3 years and didn’t miss a beat - a friend had one at the same time and his was terrible and had lots of problems so bad that land rover eventually took it back !

My second one (which you would think would be better after 3 years experience building them) was a complete dog - engine has been our 3 times and lot of other problems

how can that happen in a modern production line ? the concept of a Friday afternoon car just should not be possible these days ?

just seems to be pot luck with land rover getting a good or a bad one !

Or is it something to do with the quality of bought in components where the manufacturer dictates to the supplier how much profit they can
make

If you think the RR is expensive you are correct. If you compare it with something cheaper. If however you compare it with a Bentayga, Aston Martin, Cullinan or a myriad of other vehicles, it just isn't. And if you think a Mercedes Benz is more reliable, you are sadly mistaken. Very much mistaken. All vehicles in this category can be very expensive indeed to run, no matter what the brand, and nobody should be under any illusion otherwise. Yes, I have owned Mercedes and friends have and have had them also, and I've owned Range Rovers to 100,000 miles as well. I wouldn't hesitate having another of any of those vehicles.

The engine is made by Ford of course, not Land Rover. Quite soon most JLR engines will be built in their own factory. At least up to the straight six 3.0 petrol and diesel engines. They will probably keep buying in a V8 option for the Vogue but I wouldn't bet on it with the current emissions and electrification agenda.
