Gains and losses on straw sales tend to cancel out, over the years.

Real lunacy this time would be to bid for standing crops, which must be far more difficult to assess than they have been for several years past.

In 1975 we bought a considerable acreage yielding more than 40% less than was estimated, which hurt.

My excuse to my employers for this fiasco then was that we were buying the land concerned with completion in June and that the yields were all set by the vendor's greedy agents.

Yes @Brisel two sales have already taken place near to me!

One on farm which had some very poor crops and some decent ones, Best fields of Wheat £94/99 acre, worst fields in the £70's.

Collective auction, trade was on fire, barley between £101 and £119 acre and wheat £80/90 acre, oats upto £90 acre with most £50/70 acre, spring barley topped out at £68 acre for a thin crop on 48 acres.

Given less yield this year v last year I would say prices are up between 30/50% on the year.

The barley prices above indicate that if costed that will work out around £110/15 ton delivered on farm.

If anyone is intrested there is a large collective sale online this weekend ( ends 7pm Monday ) thou it should be noted that for the first time in history a buyers premium of 3% will be charged on the sale price )

Let's just hope that all the buyers have all done their due diligence.

We've got fields worth £140/acre and others only £40 but they all look very much the same from the road.

Well I assume bidding will kick off at some point soon because at the moment many lots have no bids and even the ones that do have bids most are a good £15/25 acre less than previous sales the last two weeks.

Really good fields of Wheat are only bid at £50/72 acre so far ( a couple at £80 ) and a cracking field of Winter barley only at £44 acre.

Some OSR is at £50 acre but that made daft money last year anyway.
