Hi
We have a 2006 J D 6420 Premium Common Rail, the water to air intercooler that sits on top of the inlet manifold - looks like a stack of rectangle plates, part # AL 172 218 has always leaked coolant a little bit at the base, has got abit worse - can these be repaired or is replacement the only option?

Now Then..
Being aluminium, you would think it's repairable.. However, it's not that simple. Age, coolant and the way it's made make soldering difficult.
We've only ever fitted new ones. If we charge for a repair and it leaks, customers grumble and want it doing for nothing next time.
So, better to fit a new one and only have them grumble about the price..
Your dealer may do favourable terms if you're a prompt payer??

You'll find the ally has rotted at the bottom.

Over time and where the coolant is not replaced as the corrosion inhibitors degrade sediment settles in the bottom and rots it out.

Sorry.

Had to put a new one on a 6920...... didn't see much change out of 500 quid. Replace the rubber seal between the manifold and charge cooler whilst you're at it although its not much of a seal really. There is a company that sells them in Germany, not sure if they sell just to the trade or not as I didn't get far with them tbh.

Talked to a radiator shop on the phone and he said bring it in and they would see what they could do.
So got around to taking it in. Went to one radiator shop, he said they are not repairable OK...... So went to another one (the one I talked to on the phone) he said he would have a go at it.
It was leaking down at the base, he used a good alloy cleaning solution (the item gets heated up).
He then applied some aluminium bonding product while applying a strong vaccum (to the water side), then let set overnight.
He tested it to 40psi the radiator cap only runs around 10psi.
Fitted it up with new mounting and main air seal grommets and ran up to operating temp, so far so good.
Cost NZD$140.00. New intercooler NZD$1502.00 - We'll see how it goes. The tractor is mainly a loader tractor, it doesn't do real hard work.
No great loss if it fails I'll get a new one.

Problem with those intrcooler are they leak internally as well. So your engine swallows coolant.

I bet if you priced that intercooler further down the island the price will drop.
