There must be a reason that I'm the only one around here that hasn't had the quad pinched ....My late father said never show off - it will backfire. True what with rural crime the last thing we want to do is line up kit and advertise to come and get it. Be low key and be smart.
Farmers don't have to compete with other farms in order to win contracts to supply food.
What happens when major construction projects go vastly over budget...............which they allways seem to.Farmers don't have to compete with other farms in order to win contracts to supply food. You can't compare ag subs to government or council contracts awarded to privately owned businesses to supply services or complete construction projects.
Likening ag subs to Police and Fire brigade spending is stretching it a bit?
You’ve never grown veg then.......
What happens when major construction projects go vastly over budget...............which they allways seem to.
What happens when a farmer produces food below the cost of production
They don't pay the sub-contractors and the smaller guys go bust , the big guys get the next contract, under a different company name. What happens when major construction projects go vastly over budget...............which they allways seem to.
Watch it don't catch fire with all that oil about?Well, there’s not much public money ( or private money for that matter ) being spent on shiny kit here

Our neighbour showed off his new £2000 bike on Facebook. It disappeared from his shed that night. Turns out the local ferals know everyones' names and keep an eye on postings. Many years ago I had a stint looking after shops. One night had a call the store had been done over turned out the idiot managers son had taken a photo of a pile of cash before going to the bank and put it on Facebook. There’s a lot of truth in your theory
This shiny machinery thing is happening in other industries and the public don't bat an eyelid. They are investments being made by private business and the usual aim of it is to reduce labour requirements or increase productivity. Simple as that. Fudge the public- they don't know much about anything and they should care even less. Subsidies are a non-issue because they are going.
I only belong to old tractor groups populated by other vintage nuts, and that gets bad enough when it comes to covetousness and slagging off farmers- "he must have too money", "Old bugger wouldn't sell it to me!" etc etc. And most of them are fellow rural dwellers Otherwise, no one else really caresExactly.
I think we are over playing the level of interest the general public have in what we do far less the price of the machines required to do it.
Most never notice what’s going on in the fields around about them. They could pass the same field on their way to work every day and never notice the one day the latest big lexions and fleet of 18t Stewart trailers are in there harvesting it.
I wouldn’t get to worked up if some in thr industry want to show of their latest toys. Only audience is others with much the same interest so what’s the harm?
Exactly.

Even if it isn’t a case of “showing off”, I think UK agriculture needs to be very aware of public perception - after all, it is the public who fund you & who are your customers. You would rather have them feeling sympathetic than jealous . . .
can you buy a decent uk made 4x4 that will tow 3.5 ton thenWhat do the debt figures quoted really mean though ? Locally over the past decade we have seen a lot of smaller farms sold, resulting in the former owners or their families taking a large chunk of cash out of farming, invariably their land has been purchased by one or two farmers who are intent on expansion using cheap money from the banks. One buyer stated that he told his bank "if you don't lend me the money someone else will". He's bought well over a 1000 acres over the past decade and spent millions on grain stores. His loan debt will be many millions, but to him its a sign of good business rather than a problem. |As to farm envy, there's always someone out there who will think you are earning a fortune off their backs because they confuse turnover with their hourly wage. The one gripe I have is people who wrap themselves in the Union Flag whilst readily spending their money on imported goods, we used to have one local farmer driving around with a "back UK farmers" sticker in the back of his Daihatsu.
