If he’s close by call on him, if not keep with the phone till you do catch up with him. If he’s a nice bloke like you say problem will be resolved when yoo speak to him if not he’s a wa#ker and I’d have no issue in telling everyone so. Always remember contractor coming with bill for 1st cut silage, old chap looked at it and said straight away that it was wrong, contractor looked at bill and couldn’t see any problem and was starting to worry, old chap replied you’ve not put last years hedge cutting on. It was only a couple hundred quid but the point is honesty is the best policy to most people.

Did you write an quite or alike in writing or agree price verbally? Is he a business or private. I would call him up or email him saying you made a mistake, happy to take the machine back or it has to be the right money as agreed not mistakenly invoiced for.
It was verbally agreed. But now won't answer phone

If the price was agreed, I would do as you have done and get straight back to him and point out your genuine mistake. Surely the amount owing is the amount you agreed on the deal?
I bought something the other day for £275 - paid by card and drove off. Wife looked at paperwork and said I thought you paid £275? “I did”! No invoice says higher amount. Back to the dealer - he had mistakenly put on the invoice , the price on his screen, not what we negotiated. Credit note, new invoice, refund and new debit - all sorted amicably ?
I see this as the same situation

Once when buying a car the salesman made a big mistake when calculating the price to change. About 5k low if I remember correctly.

I was stupidly honest and pointed out mistake. :banghead:

I had same but purchase price. Had spoken about price roughly went back a few months later to get a signed order form he filled it in and passed it to me to sign I asked him if price was right twice, he said it was so I signed. 3or4months later after I rung to see how far it was from been delivered he rang back to say he'd made a mistake with price

Unfortunately if the purchaser has been given an invoice and paid it I don’t think there is a lot that can be done other than appealing to his good nature.

however having done business myself with @Dave W in the past I know he is an extremely honest decent chap who is just trying to make a living so I hope the purchaser sees there’s a genuine mistake and cooperates to rectify it.

IANAL but I think the invoice is not the legally binding part of the sale, its the sellers quote of a price that is then accepted by the buyer. The invoice is just the demand for payment for the previously agreed price. If you have any proof that the agreed price was £900 higher than the invoiced total ( say emails/texts between the parties) then I would issue another invoice for the £900 and if its not paid chase it as a bad debt through the Money Claim Online small claims system.

If you don't have any proof of the agreed price and the deal was entirely verbal then I suspect its an expensive lesson........

Just issue another invoice for the balance of the agreed price. See what he's made of.

My ex boss, some years ago, invoiced a farmer for a trailer, which was paid in full. On going through the accounts at the end of financial year, some many months later, he saw the amount on the ledger and thought 'that's a lot for that trailer'. On investigating the invoice he found that he'd mistakenly overcharged by £1000. It was only a slip on one number of a sequence. Went to see the farmer with a cheque for the £1000+VAT next day.

Thanks for that. I think the expensive lesson is where it will be
