Just issue another invoice for the balance of the agreed price. See what he's made of.

My ex boss, some years ago, invoiced a farmer for a trailer, which was paid in full. On going through the accounts at the end of financial year, some many months later, he saw the amount on the ledger and thought 'that's a lot for that trailer'. On investigating the invoice he found that he'd mistakenly overcharged by £1000. It was only a slip on one number of a sequence. Went to see the farmer with a cheque for the £1000+VAT next day.
Or go round and 4x2 him

Good luck @Dave W if the guy is any kind of decent human being, he will come up with the cash, otherwise I sincerely hope that karma takes it's course!!

I’d second that.
Several years ago, a young man on his first foray into finance, organised a lease hire deal for us on a tractor. Somehow he filled in the paperwork incorrectly, and the finance company paid us the money, not his dealership!
We cashed the cheque and sat tight. He rocked up a few days later very red faced, to see where the money was and what we’d do.
We gave him a cheque for his money - and a cuppa.

Anyone can make a mistake. It’s how you deal with it, and also you have to live with yourself.
Some people really couldn’t lie straight in bed.

I hope this buyer does the decent thing.

$5 says he calls you tonight as he’s been out all afternoon using used machine, that he is well pleased and that he will post you the balance cheque. Ya?!
An update to this.
as warpy not so psychically predicted the man has indeed been out using the machine without his phone.
he rang back 10 mins ago and acknowledged he'd not noticed the error and will send cheque for the difference.

Looks like the nice guy was a nice guy after all.

thanks for all the replies everyone.

It was verbally agreed. But now won't answer phone

Ring him from a different number, that usually gets a response!

Unless you have a written quote that says different, technically you'll have to take it on the chin if he's paid what was on his invoice.

However, there are options:

You hope he's reasonable, clarify what should be on the invoice, knock a bit more off, and hope he comes good

Does it say 'Delivered' on the invoice? If the chap digs his toes in, and it didn't say delivered on the invoice, send him a bill for delivery for the £900 short, or at least a good proportion of that.

Finally (and I'm sure you know this) check before sending invoices, not everyone is honest.

I started writing this response an hour or so ago - I go for my tea and come back and finish it - and in the meantime all is sorted! Grand job.
