I currently produce about 35 bags a year. Like many others, I don’t have room to keep that much back, on the hope that the glut by doing so caused next year would see a reversal of wool’s fortunes.

It might well be sensible for the wool board to hold a lot back in bales sorted into grades, as they do already for auction.
Bad enough finding room for my 3 bags!

Wool needs a new market and some imagination. I would like to see wool samples sent to Uni's, chemical producers, any kind of centre that can analyse stuff, break it down ,whatever and tell them if you can find a use for this stuff or its constituents, there is a supply ready and waiting and for the first year you can have it for sweet f.a. After that you pay. I was thinking giving it away for nothing is no worse than burying it in the muck heap, but how long before some idiot slaps a disposal cost on it and says no burning, burial or rotting of said product allowed? Anyway, as long as man made textiles are cheap, wool textiles are niche, and most GB wool is unwearable . (Blackie wool budgie smugglers anyone?)
Just a wee aside, once had a phone call from a man who wanted a handful of fresh wool. He had an artificial leg and wanted the wool to put between his stump and the cup it went in. Said nothing else was as effective at preventing chaffing. That's definitely a niche market though.

It's not. You could just fact check this sort of thing before you post it, you know.

Quite funny really that everything I post on here you always claim is wrong yet don't produce any counter statement/ figures to back up your trolling, must be a sad life you lead thou I suppose it will be brighter when we actually leave the EU :)

The top man earned 166k for the last accounts produced, next ones aren't out but they will likely show 175 ish K for the top man at the BWMB.

It’s not my job to do your research for you.

Still waiting for a source for the furlough clawback “facts” you checked and confirmed correct yesterday, by the way.

I am afraid you too are getting the full-blown GUTH modus operandi here. Basically, his party trick is arriving on a TFF thread and fabricating something you have supposedly done or said on the forum in an effort to damage your persona in the collective minds of the forum. I see he did exactly the same to Sid not many days ago and he has done it to myself and countless others. It's how he operates and the fact he is accusing you of trolling is nearly hysterical in itself. There will be no end of people who will agree with what I have said. I would not concern yourself with what he posts or what kind of light it casts you within; any regular on TFF would recognise you as a genuine, modest and very astute poster.

That's just the sort of niche market most producers would give their right arm/leg for :woot: :bag::bag::bag::bag:

:sorry: sorry, just couldn't help myself

I'll get me coat :X3:

Too kind, but whilst I strive to be genuine, I'm not always modest and rarely astute.

But yes, it is hysterical that the chief troll would accuse me of being similar.

The end user of the wool has to make a product that is judged against Matalan and Primark prices. That is today's reality.

And here we are again - when will we ever learn. Your words ring so true. Same as with the food 'crisis' of a few months ago, when those who could switched to the local producers and begged delivery slots and farm gate food as if they'd always supported UK agriculture - then ran to Primark when it opened for their clothes shopping. It's education and opportunity and we no longer seem interested in championing what we can do. We seem only to want to participate in the race to the bottom by which time it will be too late.

Our lovely Chancellor of The Exchequer is going to give homeowners vouchers to buy insulation for their homes.

Perfect opportunity for wool that won't make garments or carpets to be utilised as insulation. There are already companies processing wool for just that purpose.

Doesn’t the cost of the treatment needed for fire proofing etc, make the wool product much more expensive than the synthetic stuff?
I doubt the cost of the raw material was what was making it uncompetitive before.

Looking at prices, it isn't as cheap as the "normal" stuff, but it's wool, which is naturally fire retardant, breathable, and low carbon.

Putting a voucher towards any insulation is likely to bump up cost - see the govt stock handlinghandling equipment grants - but it will make a difference in widening choice.

I'll think you'll find that wool isn't nearly as good as glasswool insulation aka fuzzy wuzzy and a lot more natural wool is needed compared to the commercially produced alternative to achieve the same insulation rating. This goes against building regs where X amount of insulation is required making natural sheep's wool unfit for the job. Snookered by our own British red tape. I wouldn't expect it to be any other way.
