Case ih mx100 hydraulics

I have been a Case mechanic in Australia for 30 years and 5100's, MX's are my specialty. The symptoms are hydraulics not returning to low pressure stand by when nothing is being used. Wiggling the steering or a fiddle with remotes can get them to return sometimes. I am currently on my second MX with this problem, the 1st one I sourced a second hand pump housing and fixed the problem which confirmed my diagnoses. This one I am going to modify the pump housing and I am 99 percent confident it will fix the problem. I am reluctant to give specifics as I believe I may be able to make a buck or 2.

I may be too late but cancel your order for a new compensator. There is a batch of pumps made around 2002 that has a faulty drilling in the pump housing. A complete pump will be needed or I can modify your existing pump for a much lower price. I would give more details but it took me forever to diagnose this problem that Case won't admit to having and I reckon there are thousands of pumps out there with this problem. McCormick also have same issue with there MX.

How are you going to help when you are in Australia, and not willing to divulge your secrets.

Thanks Gavin its just you said to cancel the order for a new compensator as there was a batch of pumps made with a fault. So I was assuming you were going to suggest how we fix the issue with out buying a new pump or compensator ?

Ok, I've slept on it and reveal the answer as you will still need someone who knows what they are doing to carry out the modification.
The piston that controls the swash plate can block the drilling that supplies the oil when it gets in a certain position. The pump will have to be removed and dismantled and with a die grinder make a small extension outwards in the piston bore from the oil supply port. I will post again after I reassemble the 170 I am working on to confirm that it is successful but I am pretty confident.

image.jpg Interesting, I would be curious to hear your findings.
The compensator solved the problems on the baler. It hasn't had much use since the hay harvest. It's next job is snow removal this winter. It was a pain in the butt last yr with the pump labouring with the two way plow. I'm hopeful the issue is solved but won't know until I mount the unit and operate it.

Isn’t the control piston supposed to cover the oil gallery and uncover it as the oil from the compensator valve moves the piston?

Sounds peculiar that the pump needs such a basic mod after having worked correctly for several hundred or likely thousand hours, iyswim?

Especially given that OP has replaced the compensator and the pump now destrokes correctly, without this mod?

No it's not suppose to cover the hole, that is the problem. Other pumps I've looked at have the port further up the bore.
The tractors I've encountered with this problem have had it since new, it's only when they changed ownership to someone who had numerous MX's noticed it wasn't behaving the same as them. A telltale sign is if the main hose from the pump has been replaced due to overheating.
Maybe OP had a different fault. I've had 2 tractors now with the same problem and they were built within 2 months of each other in 2002 so I'm guessing there must be lots more out there.

My case mx 170 is also from 2002, with same symptoms and main hose has been replaced by previous owner. What will I do with faulty compensator valve? Kind regards

Just bringing this thread up to see if anybody has tried Gavin Worthys method of sorting out the hyd pumps sticking and not going back to low pressure stand by? I have a pump off the tractor to sort out. Tried removing and cleaning the spools but still has the fault.

Wondering if your housing modification fixed the hydraulic issue on your mx170? I'm still having an issue with my pump hanging up occasionally on my mx100. Made up my mind to finally do something about it. Starting to really annoy me when doing front end loader work now.
