At this point the red mist desended ( like I say, very unusual for me ) and asked him to leave in a firm tone, still went back to his story, at this point I lost the plot and shouting started, he did eventually leave, but not quickly.
Puppies and GPS been disappearing in the area of late, and we have both.
How should I have handled this ?

Sounds like you handled it spot on @Adeptandy but in future don't be shy in acting crazy right from the get go. I find conversations finish quite quickly.

The last feed rep that came cold calling here I did the voice of the tasmainian devil cartoon as soon as his feet hit the yard concrete, which was the sign for my wife to come running out of the house, take my arm and say "sorry but he hasn't had his medication today yet".

That Audi couldn't get into reverse quickly enough!
