I maybe could have handled this better, but I'm a pretty good judge of character generally and this one I reacted to very quickly.

Chap turned up in the yard, ( we're 1/2 a mile off the main road and its a dead end once here ) nice shiny black newish car, well dressed, asking to speak to a vaguely described chap that he says he saw here 6 months ago, well that chap has never been here. I then asked him for his name and company he worked for, reply was, I don't have to give you that information, at which point I asked him to leave, he didn't, just returned to his story. At this point the red mist desended ( like I say, very unusual for me ) and asked him to leave in a firm tone, still went back to his story, at this point I lost the plot and shouting started, he did eventually leave, but not quickly.
Puppies and GPS been disappearing in the area of late, and we have both.
How should I have handled this ?

In this situation take your phone out and film the vehicle and the man. It's suspicious and the bloke was on private property unannounced. Don't threaten anything. They soon pish off if they are on camera.

If he was genuine why would he refuse to give you a name and company number?

Sounds like you handled it spot on @Adeptandy but in future don't be shy in acting crazy right from the get go. I find conversations finish quite quickly.

The last feed rep that came cold calling here I did the voice of the tasmainian devil cartoon as soon as his feet hit the yard concrete, which was the sign for my wife to come running out of the house, take my arm and say "sorry but he hasn't had his medication today yet".

That Audi couldn't get into reverse quickly enough!
