Cheviot Mules

The fact Chev Mule ewe lambs averaged £150 at Longtown 2 yrs ago says it all. - yes, ewe lambs not gimmers.

They're very much in demand for a reason
Just got up granted, got a miserable job of tagging way too many store lambs!! But confused if 2 years ago average means august 2018 or 2017? Well doesnt really matter, neither year was close to averaging 150. From memory at both sales maybe 5 to 8 pens exceeded 150 pounds, but average would be around 55 pounds lower than what you quote. I may be a few quid out but im sure not a lot, i buy 250 out of the normal 5500, some top pens, no lower than second pens, and the top end breeders not the ones that have an odd couple of pens. I was the first judge of the competition, so know breeders and the sale fairly well.Fairly certain my order for someone of 200 tuppers top end last year averaged 115 and 150 top end runners averaged averaged 87, the year before of similar numbers was 112 and 88. An average of 150 is a ridiculous statement, i think you have read top price not average im afraid

Apologies I had mis remembered slightly. £114 average for ewe lambs. £154 average was for the gimmers and it was 2017.

Very strong trade for ewe lambs.

But still... you were there and you're talking that trade down?

While i don't know all the leading flocks , they are mostly out of big borders type park ewes ,Archbank is hill northies .While west coast anguses lambs look smart he is competing with lambs born in march on good grass weaned in july /aug and fed hard plus the best grass , personaly i would buy his lambs as they will go on and do without getting up to 90+kg as adults

Why dont you just put a Border Leicester on them and then you will have some proper sheep.

Scotch Halfbreds take a lot more farming than Cheviot Mules. Need a good farm to get the maximum potential out of the ewes. Used too be a lot round here. Dairy farms that ran 150-250 ewes as well as the cows. When the cows went after a couple of years the sheep started slowing down.
We tried them years ago for a while. Found them to be HUGE, fat & idle. While being mental too boot. Cheviot mule throws a much tighter skinned lamb nowadays.
Borders were the king once, not any more

Just being nosy here, don't feel obliged to answer. Do you run any Cheviot Mules on yourself?? Your Mules always look top notch as shearlings, thought you might have some Chevi's the same!
The Charolais stores I had off you last year did famous, very stretchy well conformed lambs by February. ?

I have farmed NC Mules and Cheviot Mules and in general I would favour the Cheviot Mule.
Positives:- have a better conformation lamb than NCM with higher sale value
Generally tighter skinned lambs better for live sales and ewe lambs
Cull value of ewe better than NCM
Decent sheep to farm once calmed down
Negatives:- will definitely have afew less lambs than a NCM under same management. Ask any scanner.
Can be flighty as ewe lambs but soon settle.

Not talking trade down at all, normally a fierce trade despite whatever lamb price and shearlings been doing, remember i think 2018 trade was hot alongside a scorching day under that roof just made it hotter and hotter, especially when you have a couple of orders to fulfil at a price. I went to low granted by 15/18 quid, but as said just got up and saw an average of over 150 when i bought a few of better runs top pens and thought thats not possible any year and wasnt by 40 quid

Not at all being nosey, dad always bought top scotch half breds from boswells and lockerbie for years until probably mid 1992/93 when the old bicester sheep fair under midland marts top pen was disappointing and should have come home, but was a neighbours bid, second pen he felt not enough and ran next couple of hundred straight through. Grandad had had then since mid 1930s down on steam train i think.Had a few years of no white faces and think around 2000 he got into chev mules, dont know how probably through top farmers he bought suff xs from on the borders, one relation sells good chev mules at longtown now. Was more into dairy and beef those days so dont recall prices, but no following around us, so too dear to buy better end tupping lambs, and leave a great profit selling as shearlings even with the lamb. A pen or 2 down and cheaper lambs would have been overlooked as a new breed compared to run dry suffolks. But loved sheep so decided to lamb 3 them 3 times, which helped split lambing with minimal staff, tried selling at thame and exeter.. Thame ok around price we paid for them or a tenner less but 3 years later, exeter they took off and was averaging a tenner more than purchase price and 3 crops of lambs. But no longer buy them, local marts i dont see barely any premium for better quality lamb, trade for them dropped off by 20 quid at exeter, got orders for same lamb i was buying for sometimes over 200, plus my 150 meant i could generate a trade for those lambs even if no one else was there!!!

Drove across to longtown last year was a lovely day out, seen great lambs fit to top sold for 90 pound didnt think it was that dear of a sale for the quality of the stock, bought 100 2 yr old ewes privately have to say I was a bit disappointed with they're mothering ability but they do their lambs very well and have lovely ewe lambs to sell off them
What part of ireland are you in @Sheep92? I’d love to try a batch of Cheviot mule ewe lambs but they seem to be fairly scarce round here

Head up to the Jalex sale next Thursday night, they have 150 shearlings and 120 cast ewes , mind you you might need to come up with the euro millions numbers on Tuesday night first though.
Yes I wouldn’t mind a few of his but unfortunately I’m buying to try an make a few ££ back on them and some of prices at it last year were madness. I can’t imagine they will be much cheaper this year. Do you know if his shearling are home bred or do they come from Longtown as ewe lambs?

They came from longtown, he judged it last year, think he bought quite a lot of lambs in it
