Why are they streets ahead of the lleyn? Bear in mind I know there are shite lleyns our there, but focks like nithsdales that I've seen on here seem to be doing a good job
I must be seeing the worst of the Lleyns. They were“ the breed“ up here a number of years ago. Today they are virtually extinct. The reason, I think is that up here we have the Lairg type Cheviot which is a better all round sheep.

I agree theres plenty of bad ones about, I have 100 cheviot mules in my 1200 ewes, they do the job but dont stand out or do it any better than the other 1100 ewes which are a mixture of texel crosses belclare crosses and easycare cross texels, a neighbour has a lot of lleyns and gets on well with them, I'm not insulting any breeds but just dont get why they make so much at these sales, ive about 1200 lambs sold averaging in an around 100 euro apiece and trade is good, them cheviot mules be a while making back what theycost producing fat lambs

Thank you.

My ewes still need improving in a few areas - but I think I'm a bit too hard on them.

I tried the Cheviot Mule (from Lairg ewes) and really wanted to like them but was left disappointed. The Texel lambs off them are real quality, but the ewes I had were the most labour intensive at lambing of everything I've tried and didn't give anywhere near enough lambs to justify the work

What type of cheviot are the best cheviot mules bred from? For a lowland farm, scaning 200%, to a texel and lambs away quickly?

I would say a Lairg (hill type) NCC make the nicest ewes. Although to be fair Cheviot mules out of the less extreme (without the massive heads) Park type NCCs would also be good.

Ewes out of the South Country Cheviot would be smaller, probably hardier but scan less lambs I imagine.

The sale tomorrow is cancelled due to the weather. If you could call all prospective buyers of gimmer lambs and let them know not to bother turning up, that would be fantastic! Anyone interested in shearlings can still risk going though.
I heard that all tupping lambs had been sent for slaughter due too the good trade in the fat. Only running lambs and shearlings will be available tomorrow. Anyone wanting strong lambs would be as well to save the diesel and stay home
