Haybob headstock. How good a welder do I need to be to sort this?
I'm pretty competent but not amazing at it.

Take off the 4 bolts that hold the linkage frame to the rotor frame and turn it over, V out the crack with grinder and clean all paint off, clean small bit for a good earth connection and weld her up, turning the frame over so that you're always welding on the flat not vertical. Cut a few plates to strengthen it if you feel it needs it

I've been thinking about it while baling today and that's exactly what I decided to do. Dad sent one off to be done by professionals last time but that was 25 years ago when haybobs were worth something. I think I might as well have a go.

Only god knows why I save things like broken shear tabs, at least that is until I want a decent base for a soldering iron stand.

Got a fair bit of summer cover that will need topping.

Most of it didn't get rolled, and I've got lots of flints, so had a bit of a hunt around, and came up with this.

No parts were harmed with the exception of a bit of threaded bar. The fan is long gone, having hurled itself to pieces down the tunnel many moons ago, in case anyone wonders.

It wont catch them all, but it might help!

we couldn’t find the insulator scewer inner tool, so I quickly bodged a heavy duty model, bit of box section I found hiding under the bench which was the perfect size, no cutting or adjusting needed, cut a bit of flat steel for the end off an old guard, found a m10 bolt with knackered threads, I did however have to use a brand new welding rod to reach down to weld the bolt head in, and also the grinder blade to take the edges off was new last week and not a worn down 9” disc with no guard

Remember me asking for advice about welding a cracked headstock on my haybob? Well I did it yesterday it was a bloody mess and much worse than it looked once I started grinding away at it. Anyway I did it and was surprised how thin the metal is on them no wonder they are known for cracking... Not my tidiest welding but it's solid! Maybe I should have grinded the lumps off and painted it but was in a hurry to get going again. It holds (y)
