Tesco wtf?

My brother sent me this the other day, he shopped in Lidl before Aldi and Lidl were popular as he can walk to Lidl from his house but the others are too far. Making me jealous looking at it....

We normally shop in Aldi or Lidl, however due to time constraints, the only place open late this week was Tesco.

amongst the purchases was a pack of British lamb chops. We’ve just had them for tea, what started out as smallish chops, ended up about 2.5” square, and reduced to around 10mm thick, pan full of water. This doesn’t happen with Aldi or Lidl lamb.

Why?

What does Tesco do to theirs?

If that’s what it’s all like, they’re doing the anti-meat movement a big favour. I wouldn’t buy their lamb chops again.
Don,t buy meat from supermarkets, end of, for that reason, one thing lock down has done has introduced more of the general public to farm shops, local butchers etc.

buy about 75% of our meat in bulk from butchers shop at slaughterhouse, but when I get busy and with childminder and school/nursery still shut, opportunities for an hr an half round trip in office hrs without kids have become pretty limited.

I know what it,s like when we get busy, we bought another freezer that can hold a whole lamb, problem solved then, my mrs don,t trust what supermarkets in general pump into the meat they sell. Most of the general public dont know what there eating, it sais lamb chops on the packet but the chemicals that are added, whats that doing to us in the long term. Cancer on the rise!! Is there any connection with these chemicals that are pumped into food in general to make it last longer and keep its colour. Jury, s out on that one.

Take it that's 1 at portlethen that I was on about. It mainly supplies Tesco. Do you have any idea why it's better out butchers shop at side than it is when it lands on Tesco shelves?

I'm genuinely interested as to why? I think it's better too.

Perhaps its transport or plastic packaging.

Talking to someone the other day who supply all the major supermarkets with product. Basically Aldi and Lidl pay within 21 days (they insisted apparently) whilst the others insisted on their usual 90 days.

But we must remember that Tesco’s are the heroes of the pandemic
Our dairy sells cheese to all the multiples and has said in the past that Aldi and Lidl are by far the most straightforward to deal with.

Crikey. It’s bollox like that which cause all the unfounded food scares that keep getting laid at the industry’s doors.😡

Supermarkets, or smaller retailers, don’t add chemicals to a packet of lamb chops. Try looking in the processed food aisles if you want to see that, but even then, only chemicals that have to be approved as safe. Whether you wish to avoid those is obviously a different matter, but to start spouting nonsense about fresh meat being ‘pumped full of chemicals’ is extremely damaging.

You guys do realise that most ‘local’ butchers these days just ring an abattoir and order a couple of sides of beef, half a dozen dressed lambs and a few pig carcasses? That meat will be exactly the same as that sourced by the supermarkets.

Some of those butchers will of course then hang it for longer than the big retailers, and may cut and present it differently, but a lot aren’t sourcing their own stock, and fewer still are slaughtering their own of course.

Most retailers don’t hang meat because that has a cost, which few of their customers are willing to pay. Margins are so tight, and the sector so competitive, that shaving pennies off like that are important. The first thing we do with supermarket steaks is leave them in the fridge for a good while. It improves them no end.

So why are you so anti aldi?
They seem to be a lot more pro British farmer than tesco and I don't remember them duping the public into buying horse meat sold as beef or am I wrong?
Erm, it was the processors that duped not only tesco, but other supermarkets & food chains, into buying adulterated products!

Beef joints in Tesco bright pink & with "added basting fat" that looks more like cardboard wedged on top, local butcher offering beautifully dark red joint with a healthy spattering of natural fat. Guess which joint cooks & tastes better!

I’m not suggesting that the meat is pumped full of anything, but making an observation that when I buy a similar product from a different outlet it doesnt shrink or sweat a proportion of its own weight out as water.

We get most of our meat from slaughterhouse shop and the lamb chops from there don’t shrink, or sweat out a heap of water during cooking.

I’ll reiterate my point that if what I had last night is typical of what the biggest supermarket in UK is providing their customers, then they are doing the livestock industry in this country a massive disservice by ruining a good product.

Yes, same one. The racks of lamb out of there are excellent.

I don’t know why there’s a difference, wife says that if something is added as part of the production process it doesn’t necessarily need to be labelled. She’s really wary because of the allergy issues our youngest one has, so does a LOT of reading about this, I get an abridged presentation later on but it doesn’t always go in and I can’t remember the details I’m afraid. 🙄

If most people can afford to do there regular meat shop at a butchers, they will butchers are expensive especially for those on NMW

my point the same product compared between retailers is being handled differently to the detriment of the product, producer and ultimately to the loss of the consumer.

Ok i will shut my mouth,but most people can make up there own minds, we are still living in a free country just about, I do agree that processed food is the one to avoid more that your meat cuts.
