Worse thing i had was the pto fell off the mower on the A500 (my fault could not be bothered take it off the mower or connect it to tractor) That went bouncing down the road like a bouncing bomb.
It missed everything by luck behind me. Never did that again though lesson learnt.

Having lost a trailer on the road i can assure you its not fun.. Fully loaded with Hestons coming through town very very lucky that it didn't run away or cause any damage. not fully sure how it came off but i can only assume the hook was not pulled fully in.. made me check and double check for a very long time after.

Not wanting to turn this into a hub v ag v money thread but ....

If this were a lorry trailer aside from being inspected is there a fail safe in place to stop this? I suspect there is @roscoe erf?

if there is why is it not standard on ag trailers.

Yes as soon as the red line is disconnected or loses air pressure the brakes come on

Awful that someone was killed but a very timely reminder for the agricultural industry to check and double check trailer road worthiness.
Whilst the issues are of relevance to agriculture it sounds like this tractor and trailer didn’t belong to a farmer and wasn’t being used for agricultural purposes, furthermore if it was a silage trailer hauling rubble it could easily have been well and truly overloaded.

As an industry we are now very quick to point the finger in these situations, generally at our colleagues, and often in the past quite rightly. However whilst there are still a number of halfwits running gear that is not fit for purpose I think that in general in the last 15 years standards have risen considerably. It is (as in this case) worth remembering that we are not the only ones operating agricultural equipment, and often as in this case it is machinery that is not designed to be used for the purpose that these people use it for thus making it well and truly not fit for purpose. Sadly it will be farmers that will be blamed in the first instance here by many onlookers. More sadly a family has lost a loved one and been ripped apart by some prat trying to beat the system to make more money.

Well said. I do think standards haveimproved massively and you rarely see total scrappers on the roads these days.......but there is always room for improvement.
Just replaced the ring hitch on my tipping trailer - they are not expensive. I should add that VOSA have a base about 2 miles from me  (I would have changed it anyway!!)

Most trailers have a plate with a hole or an eye of some sort welded to trailer drawbar to take a chain and shackle. Unfortunately tractor and hitch manufacturers don’t provide anywhere to ankor said chain

If there was a safe way to anchor a chain ***low down*** on the back of tractors I would use it every time. One thing I strongly dislike about tipping is the weight transfer of the hitch rising sharply upwards, I've seen too many pictures where the drawbar has come through the back of the seat for my liking.

yes but the risk then depending on tractor is you flip the tractor when trailer comes off, rip hydraulic top cover straight off or ensure trailer comes into cab if it comes off when tipping!! The PUH frame should have a place for a shackle
The safety chain is a failsafe if it does come detached and if the complete hitch comes loose due to say sheared bolts surely its better to attach the safety chain to a separate central point.
And yes, I've had a drawbar go through the back window past my ear, a chain to the top link would have caught it. Would have been better if the hitch was in good order to start with.
