I have an early 1965 135 and the first three letters from the number plate are BSE, I know she was from Scotland but how do I tell from them letters where in Scotland she was first registered, do you go by the first two letter or the second two. Is it BS or SE?

The second pair, SE, you mad cow! Drivearchive says Aberdeen/Banffshire (?) and has other geography mistakes like West Ham being in Reading, Peterborough in Lanarkshire and Cambridgeshire, etc.

I’m not sure about the 1210 axle but the 14 series axle that’s in mine has a different steering set up, no ram down the side. As far as I know the normal process is to fit this axle back to front as the sump would be in the way of the steering. Mine has had the sump reshaped to take the axle rather than the axle put in back to frontView attachment 901414
At the risk of being anal, fitting the axle back to front would confuse the Ackerman effect where the inside wheel has to turn more than the outside wheel at a corner.

Yes mad cow:ROFLMAO: I'm not familiar with the names or regions in Scotland, is Banffshire an old council district or area, is it incorrect when it says Aberdeen/Banffshire

Dad had AV1 on his Series 2 Landie. When he first bought it in 1945, he was in the RAF at Edzell and thought he would write to Aberdeen Council for a joke to see if he could have it for his sports car. They said yes, it will cost you £5 for the privilege so he had it. We sold it when he died and it was bought by Doug Ellis of Aston Villa for a bit more than a fiver. :)

What a super story! Regarding RAF, I once saw AV8 on a car in Hay on Wye.

well there's the thing.
We ran a 1212 with no loader, and it was constantly eating front wheel bearings, and a superannuated 990 with a loader, and was abused to hell - round bales and flat 8 grab, F off concrete weight on't back...and it hardly ever had 1!

So you're saying that it might not be a good idea to change the front axles in my pair of 996s.

Sorry for the confusion! With either 2 or 4wd, the inside, front wheel has to SWIVEL more than the outer. Naturally they will rotate at different speeds (or break a diff-lock). View attachment 903544
This is a pretty good diagram showing the Ackermann Principal, but it is slightly incorrect, insofar as the Ackermann lines should bisect directly over the centre of the non-steered (usually rear) axle.

I find it amazing that many tractor manufacturers haven’t got it quite correct. Probably using the same axles on both 4 and the longer wheelbase 6 cylinder Models, which will cause excessive tyre wear on the front wheels.

When i come to think about it,the front wheel bearings used to go on our old 1200 as well.It had no loader on it.
