Getting concerned part 2

Waiting for green tillers to die off after spraying the wheat did me no favours at all. I might have got the wheat earlier if I’d just accepted green grains and resulting higher moisture. Combine has taken every opportunity going to get the spring barley which seemed at greater risk and is finished now. We only have about 120 acres of cereals and a 14’ bed on a big combine. We took every opportunity going but still have 42 acres wheat left to do though we did get the best 10 acres last Sunday. Absolute nightmare for those with big acreages to do round here. Not much cut yet.

"I'm on chalk so the plan remains the same!!"

Can't fault that.

Problem here, T Hectares, is that we didn't actually manage to get done by our erstwhile target date, last year.

Where we did, yields were well up to our 10yr average, but where we didn't they were not, not by a long chalk.

My conclusion- stick to the usual old plan but try a tad harder to make it work this time.

I would never condemn anyone for drilling earlier this autumn, I've farmed heavy clay soils in the past and know the pressures!!
I feel luxurious in my position but it's not all roses here...

I think having a larger drill really helps... When you have alot to do you have to force it at times. With big capacity you can pick your moments which is becoming crucial to success.
I'd agree with this, the costs of having a slightly larger drill than needed are dwarfed by missing the optimum drilling window...

I reckon we will be ploughing and directly behind sowing a fair bit as cant see us finishing harvest much before time to get started ( or even before).with this in mind have dragged the old 5 furrow out of the nettles re shod it so doubling our capacity to plough /hour

Take the front panel out of that auger and use a bottle jack and wooden blocks to push the dent out again best you can. Then carefully hammer it at even as you can too, to stop it becoming banana shaped.
You could plate it, but the heat from the welder might make things worse.
Take plenty of photos in case you need to get your insurance company to replace the entire auger.

Got it straightened out and working again but claim already started, big bend in auger...
