Morning everyone, I have, as a result of the dearth of ploughing matches, purchased most of a Leyland 285! I say most because it has been standing on the coast for many years, so you can guess the state of the tin, or study the entrails it once covered! I am ,therefore seeking all the tin, and any other bits people have lying about.T 285 chalange 001.JPGhis is the beast.

Hi,
Some panels are same as fitted to middleweight tractors with safety cab.(344/384,255/270 etc.)
Doors, bonnet top and front panel(where is Leyland badge) are same as 4-cyl tractors has,so should be quite easy to find.
Grille surround panel fits from smaller ones also, but 6-cyl tractors has piece of metal screen welded on bottom.
Front side panels are also made from 4-cyl. panels, there are just extra "slice" spot welded on bottom.

God help you! We had a 285 and the engine is rubber mounted, but the gearbox is ridged, ours chewed up the plate between, amongst other disasters. Having said that ours was fuelled up to 100 HP, and I believe the Leyland 100 was the first 100 HP tractor to go on sale in the UK? It was an absolute beast for pulling, as was the Marshall 100 with the same 6.98 engine.

Thanks for confirming what I thought. I will need to either make or replace the front panel/air cleaner support, and the battery tray, only have a few bits of both left. I used to restore tractors as hobby, but I have never seen one as rusty as this, even the gear change mechanism in the trans top is solid. Chaff screens are another bit of fabrication to do.

Have you found a part yet that you won’t have to replace?
The last Leyland we had departed in 1979. It followed a series of Nuffields and one other Leyland, but that 270 ended a friendship my Father had had from school in the 30’s.
And the 285 run by one of our contractors for about 3 weeks was another warning to look at alternative brands.
Aside from all that, the best of luck with your project!!

Ha,
in many places its working out what used to be there! I have about one third of the battery tray, for example. From general wear patterns, it hasnt done much, pattern on pedals is as new, linkage and PU hitch very little wear. The design does leave much to improve, it looks as though it was cobbled together for the TV program, scrap heap challenge, Junkyard wars in the US!
It is providing entertainment though, in addition to being rusted in, bolts have lost most of their heads, so no chance of undoing them anyway.
