So who is running it now?
Mrs Brisel?

Some of those guys with thousands of acres and next to no drier will be in the sh!tWatching some of our really large scale neighbours using just one monster combine in our dodgy climate am reminded of an old college economics lecturer that said to us that in the seventies there were twice as many combines in the north of Scotland as were needed in theory. So when she went to do a whole farm budget on a smallish farm and they had two combines the first one was treated as a machinery cost and the second one was an insurance cost.

Its a bigger risk in scotland and some are running it.If they exist at all. Plenty of commercial and co-op stores about. That’s a very big risk to take...
I seem to have lost my emojisCan I apply for the Farmers weekly worst yield of S Barley of the year award. Cut 40 acres yesterday and going by trailers it did a massive 0.75 t/a ( subject to Bushel weight test, may be lower yet )
I'm losing my mojo 100 acres of S Barley drilled, various establishment methods, all the same result 0.75 - 1.25 t/a depending on drilling date and field.I seem to have lost my emojis
Just curious but why do you think your farm has performed so bad this year??? I know no one in the east has done particularly well but you seem to have really suffered especially as I'd consider you to be on what I'd call good land.I'm losing my mojo 100 acres of S Barley drilled, various establishment methods, all the same result 0.75 - 1.25 t/a depending on drilling date and field.
No rain perhaps?Just curious but why do you think your farm has performed so bad this year??? I know no one in the east has done particularly well but you seem to have really suffered especially as I'd consider you to be on what I'd call good land.
That is a shocker. What are you attributing it to?I'm losing my mojo 100 acres of S Barley drilled, various establishment methods, all the same result 0.75 - 1.25 t/a depending on drilling date and field.
Yes I get that, but we went without rain for most of the growing season too and I'm on light sand land and my yields were OK, infact a lot of stuff surprised us how good it actually was given the year. I'd consider @Adeptandy to be on good land being on the fens, certainly better than the beachy dust weve got.No rain perhaps?
Wash your mouth out. Its the future you know.........That is a shocker. What are you attributing it to?
To be brutally honest, I thought I remembered you posting some fairly horrendous drilling pictures, with a Moore drill, way back when.
I'm trying not to forget that some of these really good reported spring barley crops were planted where a first wheat should have been, and so they ought to perform.
I wish I knew, I should have drilled a week sooner in hindsight. Drilled both conventional and DD and very little difference. I think it’s lack of rain mostly. Had a wet patch that had standing water over winter and the Barley was thick and good ears, so I’m trying to console myself it was more rainfall than anything. Or the simple answer is I’m crap at it and been getting away with it until nowJust curious but why do you think your farm has performed so bad this year??? Min til had been working ok for years, only reason I’m looking at DD is BG is getting out of control. Did plough in November for W Wheats this year and that’s not been great either. Timeliness and working off farm can be a challenge, and this year my set up just wasn’t able to cope. I need to purchase a drill in the next 2 weeks as I’ve sold my collection, haven’t a clue what to get nowYes I get that, but we went without rain for most of the growing season too and I'm on light sand land and my yields were OK, infact a lot of stuff surprised us how good it actually was given the year. I was wondering if perhaps his endeavours to use min till/direct drill ect just doesnt work on his farm and he'd be better of ploughing and combi drilling.
If you ever work out which one drill does everything consistently, mind let the rest of us knowMin til had been working ok for years, only reason I’m looking at DD is BG is getting out of control. Until this year a Vaddy has been king on everything but Pea's and OSR. If I have to plough, then I'll have to give up, as just not the time or margin to do that and would need considerable investment now. I am tempted with a combi again but still not sure thats the right way to go, but think thats the most versatile option of all the drills/weather conditions. If you ever work out which one drill does everything consistently, mind let the rest of us know
