Some great advice stolen from a FB page.....

Remember why you are doing what you do, do it only for yourself and your loved ones. It is not about who is biggest or best.

It's important to be profitable but it is ok to forego a little profit to ensure you and your family are happy and have time to spend together.

Have a plan, ensure your business is resilient and sustainable. This is economically, environmentally and emotionally, you need a certain scale and a defined system to ensure it is. Future proof.

Do budgets, if you don’t it is like driving in the dark.

Measure, monitor and predict. If you make decisions with reliable data on hand it prevents looking back using the dreaded term “I should have”.

Surround yourself with the right people.

As always, be happy, profitable and sustainable.

Milking 270 this winter then? Have you found some help yet?

likely be 250 after we loose a few and cull some carry overs that won’t have enough milk. End game is grazing 280 with capacity to milk 320 over the winter if milk prices are favourable. In a tight enough block that gives us all 3 weeks off.

edit- yes found two people who split the calf rearing between them. Both from the same farm. The owner got caught shagging one of the employees younger than the daughter so the daughter left and then the employee wasn’t treated that well so left too. Win win for me as they work so well together. I do
Nearly all the morning milkings still which suits me and two nights a week which I need to find cover for.

Agree, but personal ambition to be the best at what you do is no bad thing.

But I think that is what the post says be the best at what you do for yourself and your family. Being the best dairy farmer may prevent you from doing the important things.

But you have to be a pretty good dairy farmer because if the bank manager is unhappy the wife will probably be the same
