200ha of winter barley to do over the next few days. I may do 50ha of wheat after a planned double spring Break of barley and then oats.
All no till, if I had done any form of cultivating I wouldn’t consider it because of blackgrass. Our cultivated block will wait for a few more weeks.

6 reasons I won't be starting till October at the earliest.

It's not 1995 anymore, we have no seed treatment for BYDV, pyrethroids don't work, flat crops are not fun, CTL is no more, Expoxiconazoles final year, Yellow Rust varietal resistance breaking down and Black-grass germination is greatest early Sept-Mid Oct.

In 1990 most of the above could be countered from the can.

Yes last autumn was a disaster, that was last year.

My agronomist rang all his customers to try and stop them drilling as he couldn’t do much about black grass and bydv Wasn’t happy when one said he had just about done In fairness to him he was on black grass free land

The only reason we are not 100% drilled up is because we are still harvesting

Plan to start on Monday, black grass and bydv are not issues here

If you are true no Tilling, then there's perhaps a two week delay in the crop getting going, so its perhaps no difference from a conventional start in October.

I don’t find much difference in the autumn, they tend to be slower early spring however

main reason I like stuff in early is to build some biomass early, If grasseeeds were an issue I would wait until October however

Last pass over everything will be done by Tuesday hopefully, gives a chance of rain weds Thursday Friday and Saturday, hoping for enough to chit bg , trying to sit on hands for a couple of weeks , may do a bit of winter barley end of sept start Oct , but ideally wheats will be waiting atleast 2 weeks .
I’ve a few fields I’d like to be mid October .
North beds , heavy enough with lowish levels of bg which you can’t give a inch to .

To add , we’ve had a chit on early cultivated stuff but other stuff sat dry , if we don’t get the rain we won’t get a chit , which will put extra pressure on the pre ems, spraying them on bone dry seedbeds now is not going to get the best out of them and I fear we would be on the back foot from the off re blackgrass . If I had none I wouldn’t worry too much
