Zircon/Solitair in Heavy Land

Not really. Seed slot left fairly open and coverage harrow struggled to find enough soil to pull over it.
It must be really stiff or wet ground I never had a problem covering wheat seed and that was sowing downhill because it was so wet I couldn't get up.
How deep have you got the power Harrow 3-4 inch?

It is pretty heavy clay but wouldn't have said it was puddling it in wet conditions.
Old tyre packer drill managed fine but been having problems unless left to dry for a couple of days after ploughing since moving to wedge ring roller.
Harrow in 3-4 inch. Shallower and not taking out wheel tracks. Any deeper and you'd be into even wetter stuff.

Whats the story with this drill? This post was Oct 16. I'm looking at one now over 12 months latter and being told its hot of the press.
It was a pre production model that we got as we had a whole heap of problems with the LC so we've now drilled 2 seasons with it

Going well? What's the improvements?
It's ok generally better built than LC but not as heavy as NC

Biggest problem is the price of tines compared to old model hard faced are 35 each but don't last any longer than standard in our land but they're 12 each compared to 6-7 for old model.

We've been having problems with it breaking the packer scraper brackets but they phoned to say they're changing them to something different so time will tell

It's all hydraulic depth for power harrow etc which is ok but not essential

Basically if they start making a simpler version as in non iso-bus and manual depth etc I think we'll go that route next time

But all in it's a decent drill same coulter bar as before just a new power harrow and frame work really

They say it's easier driven but we'd say it's not the dealer sold a 4m that replaced an NC and they think it's easier driven than the nc so maybe were wrong

The floating power harrow is a good and bad thing in our really stoney land it's good as it'll jump over a big rock better but it does struggle to get depth when drilling an endrig that's been wheeled down a bit and also I can't explain it but our fields are rough now it's making lots of little waves I hadn't noticed till we put a field away to grass and we worked one half with an old 3.5m Kuhn and the rest with the combi unit and as soon as I came onto the combi unit stuff it was noticeably rougher for no apparent reason.

Thanks for the info. Interesting stuff. Had the troublesome LC got Seedflex coulters? Were the problems stength related due to the extra weight of the coulter bar?
I've seen our Maschio create ripples when the packer becomes clogged and goes tight in one place as it rotates. It then slows at that point in its rotation and creates a lump of soil in front that it climbs over when it gets to a free spot.
Any experience with what Kuhn's version of the Trapize packer that they call the Steelliner?

Yeh lc problems were breaking the A frame wearing out the ends of the bars that held the coulter bar etc and eating fan drive belts as it just wasn't held tight enough.

We had an NC beforehand and it was hellish in the wet just too heavy the new one is like the nc but not as bulky

No experience of anything other than the maxi packer which does a great job for us

Ours is iso-bus but we've got a cci control box for it as well and I hate it with a passion it's always beeping about something for nothing if they made a standard control box drill would be a good machine

Our other bother is it's a fan driven by the tractors spools and we've had it on 4 different breeds of tractors and none will lift it unless at half revs the option of being driven off the gearbox wasn't available when ours was built
