On medium heavy land, what to drill wheat or barley? tonnage and profit?
id be tempted to sow either now , why,?
1we dont know prices next year but reckon the gap between ww an w b will not be as much
2wb will cost less to grow and less management time
3depends on your rotation for following year
4as all the world and his dog in the uk are sowing ww nothing wrong with going against the flow
5ww straw may well be abundant next year but the reduction in sp barley and in wb may mean there is a premium for barley straw
6wb could well be in the bank in august
7ww depending on rotation will probably yield more
8depends if you are in a straw outlet area wether for sale or muck for straw
9the coin ive tossed came up ww but as im not an inverate gambler we are sowing both
10 the choice is yours but a word of caution whatever you do will be wrong

further to the earlier post the gamble is on, we have moved back10 miles to main farm just before dusk and drill is now 1/2 way across field number 4 , the gang is down to 2 from 3 as he started very early are up for going late the ph has just started on field 5 so reckon the odds have shortened as yesterday following a wet start a breakdown and a non drying day was 100-1. now im thinking we could be 5-2 . will have to work out which next !!
update.last field number 5 sown and drill man knocked of at 2.30 am last night was a tad late in this morning but the other 2 who had knocked of at 8.30 pm and midnight having got as far as they could had got another bit ploughed and 1/2 worked so got that 10 acre sown and then the showers started so drill stopped once up to worked mark ,plough rightly or wrongly finished field so weve ended up winning our own gamble plus a bit but now with a few acres of plough getting wetter ,though its job well done and now caught up and back to needing 5 normal days to finish which for the last day of sept is in front of usual, a g & t beckons then sleep

Nothing drilled here. Wheat after osr waiting for blackgrass and 2nd wheat fields seem clean but no seed dressing so too early.
Part of me happy to see rain as will stop me having to watch all the neighbours drilling away. Fingers crossed will get a break in the weather and drill up middle of the month. Got all drilled up last year so remaining calm at moment despite rain hammering down.

Now surpassed last years Autumn drilling attempt here 🥳.

Managed a bit more yesterday afternoon to finish a field started Wednesday morning. Tractor was struggling along at times but the tine drill came into it's own. Muddled in 👍
Happy with KV? Did it replace the Vicon drill you had for sale in the classifieds?

Words I recall using this time last year... when a few dry days finally arrived in February I should have waited some more  Starting to think I should have cracked on and got the Barley in 3 weeks ago

Certainly the wheat after ab15 would not go - ryegrass germination has really kicked off. Rest would have gone. But I don't own a drill. I should be first in the queue when it dries up.
