the lamb smartrace small ones are normally around £50+ a pot need 2 bolus per head (only lasts 3 months ) i do everything with those at weaning till i know what i want to keep , usually if you show some interest in a bolus they will throw in a applicator , so that pack looks expensive , that gun will do smartrace and animax boluses its a better gun more comfortable to use than the one that comes with the animax ones , im pretty sure it does the mayo/ wynnstay/ ATC bolus as wellThat was why I was thinking that they would benefit - would something like this be a decent thing to try for a start?
Buy Agrimin 24/7 Smartrace Lamb Bolus Starter Pack 200 Pack from Fane Valley Stores Agricultural Supplies
A sustained release bolus specifically designed for lambs, containing cobalt, selenium and iodine. Intended for ruminating lambs over 25kg bodyweight. Agriwww.fanevalleystores.com
Would rather put lamb into ewe than the other way, as don't like the idea of choking a wee one - some of the SBF are only mid and low 20s on weight still.
Will go to Harbro, but would be good to know what I'm looking for.
Thanks
Tested some ewes for trace elements, copper ok,borderline cobalt and selenium still waiting on iodine but historically always low. What's the best make of bolus to but. ( looking for ease of application and efficacy rather than cheapest)
I work for mayo healthcare and we do a 5in1 bolus for sheep. Contains selenium, cobalt, copper, iodine and zinc.
1simple bolus very easy to administer.

worth getting bloods done , they only need half dozen ewes , 2 best 2 worst and 2 in middle , pretty conclusive with mine and selenium , test wasnt expensive either maybe £100 all in , generally your ground will be short of same things year to year so its just a case of treatment . you dont want to bolus for things you dont need ££ , Though lambs need colbalt in many cases even if ok on ewe tests , saves that weaning pine and scour .you wont believe how they shine a month laterFancy sending me 20 free samples and an applicator ? Happy to share with the class how it all goes.
I put an order in of 4750 with Wynnstay and didn’t get a free gun I’ve got 2 of the applicators with short spouts and 2 with long spouts, a short spout is so much easier to useFancy sending me 20 free samples and an applicator ? Happy to share with the class how it all goes.

small but mighty
im scattered over 10sq miles , you will find deficiencies covers local area more than specific farms , the whole of the mendips are short of selenium , soil types really and locking up of minerals , for one of the biggest lime quarry areas you wouldnt believe soil is very lime hungry .Not worried about the ewes, as they thrive grand - and get plenty of mineral in hard food (which is needed due to weather and grass). Also, I have about a dozen different landlords, and very variable grazing both in availability and grass types. I would have no confidence that the results would apply anything other than retrospectively. This is just for a small batch of long keep SBF stores I'm experimenting with.
Is that the Flexidine injection, does it still have to be imported. Have you used it before or is this the first time.I don’t find any of them effective at supplementing Iodine, regardless of their stated content. I see a lift in the condition of my bolused sheep when I give a potassium iodide drench, so clearly not getting enough from diet and bolus. Plan this year is an iodised peanut oil injection and a bolus pre-tupping, with another bolus with pre-lambing jabs.
Belt and braces approach this year, with the aim being fitter ewes coming through the winter, carrying more lambs and lower lamb losses. Target is 300 extra lambs to sell next year....
As far as bolus choice is concerned, Mayo and Animax are the easiest to give (Animax need copper capsule separate though, if you need it), and the bigger Agrimin Smarttrace is a pig to give by comparison. I have a feeling that the Agrimin ones may be more effective though.

How often are you drenching, do you need cobalt as well?It is, and yes, it still has to be imported under licence (although I am the ‘importer’ in this case). I’ve not used it before, but seen dramatic improvements from regular Potassium Iodide drenching. I am hoping the jab will avoid the need to drench regularly.

What's the cost of Flexidine and how long is it claimed to last?
2nd year of using Flexidine. Got our scanning from up 0.35 of a lamb last year but think a better summer helped too. Use Animax for gimmer hogs and they tupped last year at 130%. Tried Agrimin but find them too big for Lleyns plus I like that Animax are leaching and not eroding so should give a similar amount across 6 monthsI’ve seen improvements each time when drenching monthly, indicating they are below par by each drench (otherwise they wouldn’t lift). The drench only costs around 2p/dose, plus the cost of gathering/handling.
By the time all my costs are accounted for, I reckon the Flexidine should come in at about 56p/dose. Importer my vet contacted was asking 90p/dose delivered, but has taken a bit of work to arrange.
A single 1.5ml dose should supply 7-8 months’ supply of Iodine.
I too have used iodide drenching for lambs last couple of years.
