Best fluid / way to stop padlocks freezing?

Silicone based lubricants last longer than WD40. The trick is to exclude the water in the first place.

Otherwise you need to carry one of these

A lot of the high country gates in NZ have cheese/muttoncloth wrapped around the padlocks to help keep the moisture external.

Even with freezing fog etc the rags help keep them fairly dry and if they're well lubed up with CRC/WD40 type penetrants they seem to work fine, cut down bottles etc do not 'keep the air out' to the same extent
