As someone who had an accident from a swinging seed bag above a drill hopper it's great to see everyone coming up with ideas.
I'm all fixed up now!
In the nicest possible way have a look at what you are asking yourself, farm staff or a contractor to use to lift a seed bag and think, at the very least, is the cost of a bag lifter too far out of the way?

A Bag lifter doesnt stop the polypropylene seed bag loops from breaking. only time i want to lift a seed bag is out of a trailer when i know no-one will be underneath.

Should we be looking at remote opening bags
ie draw strings that can be opened without getting under the bag

or just putting seed in the same bags as fertiliser and cutting the bottom open

most my seed is bulk undressed using an hydraulic auger
while waiting for the hopper to fill I can check the drill coulters and pipes

An insurance write off spreader would be cheap. Strip the discs off and make a frame to stand it on, fit a loader-to-3 point linkage bracket on...
lol' :sneaky:

`but seriously.... Yes , its the hopper shape that's not so easy to build ....with the tapered sides..... for the farmer /fabricator, needs a bit of a jig or something ste up to helpwelding probably but i should thing cutting the correct shapes of steel is not quite easy orstraight forward either
but yes there will be a few around and old ones not rusted out i guess, and a couple of steel tubes underneath will be fine for pallet tines handling in stead or an A frame

I’d love to know what HSE would deem suficient.

On Inside the Factory with Gregg Wallace all factories unloading ingredients from tonne bags have a crane inside a cage. If the crane failed, the bag can’t fall because there is a safety plate below and a cage frame all round.

I’ve said before but almost no other industry would allow the risks that agriculture permits. Agriculture is not wrong for this at all imo. A combination of low incomes in the industry and (possibly related) a small blind eye is turned by the regulators to farms compared to construction etc.

I would LOVE to see a profitable and safe farming industry.

A hopper with a support frame under the base of the bag with a hole in to allow the spout to protrude through.

Visibility becomes ths issue so you have to put your head underneath to see the drawcord. :( ;)

Surely not beyond the wit of workshop bodgineers denies their usual skiing or shooting weeks this month?
