Levelling Up

The Tories say they want to ‘Level up’ the country.

Given the immense sacrifices made by the young in locking down to save the lives of the elderly the first thing the government should do is raise the pension age, cut the state pension, end free TV licences, free bus passes and other indulgences that the old receive. The money saved should be spent on improving schools, reducing tuition fees, improving vocational training and raising the wages of public sector employees for the under 25s.

The young are hardly affected by the virus, yet they have had their futures wrecked. The elderly need to say thank you with cash.

The 80 year olds that grew up after the war had, on the whole, increasing prosperity throughout their lives, jobs, pensions, bought houses for 20k that turned into 700k.
Their grandchildren are now without the basic freedoms that they themselves enjoyed.
This is to perhaps extend marginally the lives of the sickness 10% of 80 year olds.
And is causing suicide and mental illness amongst the young who can' t even see their friends without threat of arrest.
The young
Can't die from it
Can't get covid cash handouts
Are in some cases paying for student accomodation they can't even live in with loans they will pay back the rest of their lives.
They are being totally screwed.
Those who own houses have benefited from covid money printing which boosts asset prices, again not the young people usually.

Everyone getting something, apart from them
It's disgusting

The problem with any thread that says the lives of the young are being damaged to protect a bunch of old folk is that on this forum there are more old folk than young people. As someone with two kids whose University experience is being ruined and someone who is not in the at risk category I’d say society has its priorities wrong the old aren’t losing their jobs and businesses but I suppose its a bit like a war who makes the sacrifices usually the younger in society.

I think you should catch up. TV licences are not free, the young are getting the virus and wages and pensions in the public sector are better than in the private sector for equivalent jobs as I understand. If life is so bad here why are the migrants risking life to get here instead of staying in mainland Europe?

The young are getting the virus, but statistically very few of them are getting seriously ill and even fewer are dying. To them it really doesn’t matter.

The average age of a covid death is 82.4. The UK average life expectancy is 81! We are destroying the future of a young generation to save people who haven’t got long left anyway.

What’s done is done but as recompense provision needs to be made to improve the life chances of the young, and the money should come from the old.

The young are feckless and irresponsible. The old were young once and then they grew up.
Its about time the young stopped expecting someone else to provide for them

This older and wiser thing is a total myth. And as for the young expecting people to look after them I think they would be quite happy for everything to open up and be able to get on looking after themselves and really the whole crisis has been brought about because we have to stop everything to protect the old and vulnerable.I’d like to add older people can be just as much a bunch of gits often more so than young people.

Leaving aside your first slightly ridiculous sentence.
How do you provide for yourself if your job is currently illegal to perform?

And the young without an inheritance coming their way?
You said the oldies had all bought houses for 20 grand which were now worth 700 grand. I expect most parents thst have a decent property help their kids onto the housing ladder one way or another.
Housing costs are a big issue but how we get off the hamster wheel is a very difficult question

I didn’t say that actually, that was Essex man.
In any case the average UK house price is £256,000.
A lot of parents don’t have a decent property. A lot are in council houses, rent privately, or are paying off a mortgage on a damp, mouldy terrace in a decaying seaside town.

In any case it could easily be 50, 60, 70 before the inherit anything- so what can people do in the meantime?
