How are those beavers getting on?

Not sure if the op was about the beavers that the NT released in West Somerset or not( was on TV recently as they had built a dam), well I farm next door ( half mile away) up stream . If you talk to trust then they are excited and busy congratulating themselves how they have saved the planet !!! Reality is that they have 4 beavers on two sites, have lost several, some escaped others died but yes, in fairness one pair have built a dam . I would hate to think how much it has all cost , with fencing , buying many beavers and the staffing etc but this is very much the thing the trust want to do and it does not have to be viable money wise. Unfortunately, if it goes the way it looks like happening , then my 310 ACS is next to be tackled re reversion and no doubt beavers will figure . Let's just say they all get wet dreams about Knepp ( I think that's what it's called, was rewilded 10 years ago ???)

surely if they want to dam the water, it could be a man made in sensible position and cost less even with some sort of 'camouflage'or made of wood to make it blend in, then the water could be used in dry times in practical ways.

or is that too conventional a thought and just a bit boring because its not trendy

Yeah, it's Knepp. A few thousand acres owned by a chinless wonder who couldn't turn a profit on it so it's been turned into a safari park (for want of a better description). Owner is one of the founders and trustees of those absolute wallopers Rewilding Britain (which also happens to have Monbiot's other half, and that galloping left wing thunder[censored] Guy Shrubsole, on their "team").

Not true.
Scottish Natural Heritage have issued permits to kill animals and destroy dams.

IIRC Packham’s Wild Justice are also getting involved
reckon they will do any more ? with packam involved, he will sell the beavers as nice cuddly animals, feed the public half truths, stir the job up, result, a ban.
i had heard the scots had culled along one river, didn't know how many.
but this is the whole problem with 'rewilding' sh1te, they want to introduce animals, that haven't been native, for 100's of years, some were hunted out, because of the damage they caused, killing sheep etc, and there is no predator, other than man, to control them, who will be banned from doing that. They (some) start off with good intentions, but have no idea of the resulting problems, mainly because packup and his pals, have praised up the release, and fogged of the downside. The most obvious 'problem', is the rapid spread of otters, especially in those rivers where they have been releasing salmon and sea trout spawn, or the poor lads running fishing lakes, or trout farms, they have to put up with cormorants as well, protected of cause,

They’re “rewilding“ an area near me. For some reason they think pigs are a useful part of the process. Can’t imagine any tenant would be allowed to do this next to an open ditch:

Given that every single field of ours is standing water and our land is as wet as I've ever seen it currently, I'd love to see a photo of that now. I bet they'll be patting themselves on the back that the pigs are all stuck in danger of drowning. Best call out the helicopters........

Crikey. I wasn't talking about any area in particular, just the general idea that beavers could actually prevent flooding when we get proper rain rather than when it's dusty.

I find myself getting sadder every day with what's happening in this country. A place where people who are seemingly unable to think a single idea through properly become more and more influential in public life, getting to play out their idiotic fantasyland thoughts in spite of overwhelming knowledge and evidence suggesting they don't have a clue. We are at the sharp end of a lot of this stupidity in the countryside but it's everywhere if you look. There's no doubt that the tinternet is good in many ways but it's also the worst thing to happen to Mankind in many others, being the catalyst for the raving loons to spread their lies to huge numbers of people without any recourse to anything approaching truth. Beavers and bison and the money wasted and problems created are just a teeny tiny illustration.

the biggest problem in the UK is the amount of people ? turn the clock back to rewild the countryside at the same time reduce the size of the population to the size that it was 2 hundred years ago?
Nah , what you do is turn your own countrys best land into scrub so you have no food security then you import all the food you need .....
Like you point out , if they don't want the food grown here and the population keeps accelerating its going to end in a mess

there's an old saying, a hungry man has 1 problem, a full man has many, works quite well with this, thinking with heart, not stomach. I would pretty well guarantee that if food was a serious problem, all the 'rewilding' would rapidly disappear, in the meantime, take any money that's going, sure as hell you can't fight them !
