It was on common grazings stretching for possibly thousands of acres. Need a helicopter to herd that land.
His winter feed bill at around £1000 per head seemed odd. They were only 150 miles from east coast supplies so easily within a day transport. I have had straw coming 5 hours away at average prices.
£1000 / head I feed bills 😮
Surely that’s more than they are worth ? Or far more than they are likely to earn you from calves etc ?

yer you would buy a none pedigree for about 600

That was the trap many people fell into here during our 3 years or more of severe drought. Rather than selling their animals off when they ran out of feed ( & no likelihood of growing any more in the foreseeable future ), they just kept buying feed - often spending more than the livestock was worth & with no hope of ever earning that money back from them .

I really do enjoy this program, I liked the fire man having a go at shearing and the ewe running out the gate with half a fleece ( we have all been there), he really does seem to love her and has a can do attitude, but finds it frustrating that he can do everything.
He must really really love her. I know it's mostly down to the editing but some weeks she seems to be having a laugh at his expense every time she opens her mouth!

The chap in question said he always wanted some cows, so this little herd of highlands was kind of a hobby rather than a business. I think they hoped that they would “pay” at least but of course they didn’t. In the previous years, they could fund the highlands from their tourism but Covid killed that😕l
The bull dying just brought the issue to a head.
I didn’t see why he maybe didn’t keep three favourites and use a neighbours bull or something 🤷‍♂️
