Where will the Dutch go?

... There'll be a lot of refugees from London and Hull too.
Send them to the Netherlands? 😐

Joking apart, where will the Dutch etc. go? It is going to be a big problem and, despite its being unavoidable, nobody in government here or over in Europe seems to be recognising the fact, let alone planning for it...

Fisheries will enlarge / improve with global warming, so will currently impassable arctic trade routes, these things will make a big difference to economies. Climate change will also see higher land become more viable, be it for grass or crops, but it's hard to quantify it well.

I never heard of any fellow dutchman that they contemplate moving your way. Just so you know.
If anything, whenever I think we have it bad I go to this forum and set my mind at ease.
Also, it is kinda ironic you guys seem to have more problems with water than we do...
Odd, I have two friends - even here in rural West Wales - who moved here from the Netherlands in the last decade and, through them, I've met other Dutch people over here, there is in fact a Dutch 'community' over here.

When I worked in London there were loads of Dutch there, nearly as many as the French! And I have friends in the Netherlands who feel closer to the UK than to their neighbours in Europe, some of whom are keen supporters of the EU; perhaps it's all down to the circles we move in...

But that aside, I'll be interested to know whether you think your country really can keep defeating the sea forever and, if not, where will the people go? Your engineering has been remarkable, but I'm minded of King pansy. (The bloody stupid auto-censor has changed the name of an historical king to 'Pansy'... I wrote C N U T)

Well, they have a small piece of high ground here in Canada, in Ottawa. It was declared to be Dutch land in WW2 so that the queen who was in exile could give birth to her heir to the throne on Dutch soil. Mind you I don't think it will hold the lot of them.;)

I am quite curious who you mean by king cünt, the expensive people who that makes Holland a monarchy?

I was just pulling your leg, I am far to dull to know anyone who wants to move anyway.
I'll find something else to do, by the time news breaks out we are doomed. We survived acid rain, burping cows and all kinds of stuff that would surely be the last nail in the coffin. Odds are when push comes to shove it'll be a big fat nothingburger.

pansy - link below - got p!ssed off with sycophants saying how great he was, so he went down to the seashore and ordered the tide not to come in... which of course it did anyway. His point being that anyone thinking that someone was all-powerful was wrong, and trying to defeat nature (and 'God' back then) was futile.

Jolly glad that you aren't panicking about the coming rise in sea-level; rather concerned you aren't taking it as seriously as the science indicates you should...

I think I worded it wrong, I don't mean we are doomed anyway, but that by the time news breaks out we can not hold the tide, literally, I'll find another source of income.
But no, not that bothered about it. I live in the danger zone, but having a nice big retention area near me, the polders of Flevoland, should give me some time to escape.

Fair enough; fortunately you Dutch are pretty tall, but it's good to see that you're giving the younger generation emergency training, just in case... ;)

The Dutch have kept the sea back well enough so far. They will manage in future.
Their engineering has been remarkable so far. But, to get your head around the problem properly, you need to look at the rise in sea level over, say, the past hundred years, and realistic estimates for the future.

And then ask if the improvement in engineering over the last decade is a match for the rate at which we see the level rising, let alone what it probably will do - or may do if things are worse than we currently think.
