PRIMESTOCK

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,715 sheep comprising of 3,748 prime hoggs and 2,967 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 25th February 2021.

A smaller and mixed show of 3,748 hoggs were forward to the same ring of competitive purchasers, ensuring all classes were again sold to vendor advantage.

Best Beltex hoggs were in serious demand trading between 340p-360p on a regular basis and topping the sale at 431p was a fantastic pen of three Beltex hogg shown by DS & RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Perth. Beltex hoggs also topped the price per head at £181 for Beltex hoggs also from the same good home, who’s run of 28 Beltex hoggs averaged 43kg, 347ppk and an eye watering £158.75p per head.

Commercial export hoggs sold to serious rates, trading between 285p-295p with no let up from start to finish and many runs of commercial hoggs averaging £119+

Heavy hoggs were again in demand, with plenty of customers keen to replenish supplies.

Small hoggs were again, in full cry and the trade of the day. Beltex hoggs topped this section realising 347p, whilst Blackface lambs topped at 305p for a pen of 26 consigned by Messrs A Reid, Glendearg. Cheviot hoggs topped at 318p consigned by M & J Kennedy, Lurgan Farm, Perthshire

A great entry of hoggs consisting of the very best to the lesser end and everything in between, handled with ease, being a long way in front of deadweight returns and many more could have been sold to vendor advantage. All classes of stock sold to a total of 51 active accounts ensuring a blistering trade throughout.

Achieving an incredible overall sale average of 275.9p (SQQ 287.5p)

Again, all classes of well finished hoggs are required to fulfill demand on a weekly basis here at Longtown.

Heavy ewes dearer on the week being short of purchaser’s requirements topping at £197 for Texel ewes consigned by GP Williams & Co., Bryndansi, Abergele.

Mule ewes were small with not a lot of weight about, proving very easy to cash.

Hill ewes sold to a top of £123 for a Cheviot from TN Cavers & Co., Sorbie, Langholm.

Rams maintained recent high rates topping at £158 for Texels from P Gass, Aldery Terrace, Canonbie.

I picked up 2 yesterday. Both strong blackie hoggs. Never the bad buggers is it?! Gave them a good kicking and spent the whole ride home telling them how much they have just cost me! 😁
I can beat that by a mile, feeding ewes with lambs on Wednesday, I was waiting for tractor to meet me, so I thought I’ll just catch that ewe an spray her foot,never had to run her or worry her, tipped her back up an she had a fecking heart attack!!!! Feck me, two lambs on her as well !!!🤬🤬🤬🙈🙈🙈🙈😩😩😩

It’s a good few years ago now. I was sent too bring the ewes in ready for lambing. Me and my young pup, we were walking 300 up very very quietly as I’d been told. A big old Suffolk in for 3 turned, looked at me. I swear she smiled and just fell over sideways. Dead as a doorknob. Heart attack, same as yours!! It nearly killed me dragging it into the quad trailer later on!
