EU: open borders, or else...

Eu has shouted at 6 member states who have closed their borders because of the coronavirus pandemic. Even the Germans are getting testy. What a ridiculous situation. Countries should be able to act as they see fit to the protect their citizens. Now they are beholden to the EU for vaccine supplies and are obliged to do as they are told, or else... Germany, Belgium Denmark etc have enacted border controls in efforts to stave off the pandemic.

Effin ridiculous , all the EU are bothered about is their stupid single market , they've already shown ineptitude in controlling this virus .

The next big issue will be in a couple of months when the like of Greece start unilaterally opening up for tourism

Bit of vaccine nationalism going on is quite sad given the circumstances. I have the Pfizer vaccine, I have no clue in which country it was manufactured but I was obliged to have it given the kind of people I work with. That someone would refuse a vaccine based on it being British or whatever is a joke.

In fairness I don’t believe it’s the source of the vaccine is the issue. It’s the early stage lack of data on efficacy in older cohorts. Hence wasn’t approved for over 65 in many countries. I’ve no doubt that many people lost confidence in the AZ for that reason rather than any other.
The latest data coming out of Scotland for its efficacy in older people is very encouraging though.
Bring it on I say. Get it in as many arms as possible. The world needs as many people of inbuilt immunity to this thing, before it destroys economies all over the place.

That's not exactly true , the EUMA cleared it for use in everyone , it was individual nations that made other decisions

Yet there was no data suggesting that the vaccine is in any way a risk to the relevant age group, and its own data plus comparative analysis with other similar vaccines indicated it is of no risk and is of very probable benefit, and such has proven to be the case.

I don't think that the origin of this vaccine had any influence on this matter, I do think that the available supply did. Bearing in mind we are discussing politicians here - the 'lack of data' was a convenient smokescreen for a bit of demand management, and it worked; news from Germany suggests a bit of a face-saving exercise is starting.

I fully agree with your last point but it looks as if the issue was the fallout from the mess the EU made of the vaccines a couple of months back. When they realised they couldn't get the AZ vaccine a few arrogant politicians said "oh we didn't want it anyway, it's not effective"
That has backfired spectacularly as they now know they were wrong, but they now have a population who are reluctant to take the vaccine and a lot of lives are going to be lost because of it.
I see big problems for some big names in the months ahead.

Im not sure we can really say others have handled things particularly badly when we're number 6 on list of worst covid death rates in the world.
Greenhouses and stones and all that

What is the covid death rate? The only figure that matters is total deaths for any reason, up by about 100 thousand in the UK for last year I think, how does that compare to other countries?
