Firearms Licensing

The ever efficient North Yorkshire police have only just requested my shotgun licence having moved here last July for amendment. I wrote a covering letter at their request, declaring that I have a secure cabinet installed for safe storage because I doubt that they will ever inspect it unless something goes wrong.

You download the doctors form but the rest you fill out on line, they say it takes 20 minutes but you can’t save it as you fill it in so if you can’t complete it in one go you start again.

One easy bit this time was photo. Always gone off to one of those passport photo machines at the supermarket.
Just took selfie with phone against white wall. Seemed to accept that ok.

Think they brought the GP requirement in beginning of November. I sent mine in on the 5th of November and it was sent back saying I needed to get a GP to fill in an extra form . To get slapped with a £100 GP fee after for ticking a few boxes was a hard pill to swallow. And now knowing that most of you are paying a lot less for it is like chewing on old socks .

In Gwent it was earlier than that, and I had to cough up £120, so your not the most expensive 😂

Given how things are.. how soon should one apply for a renewal, West Mids region?

As early as possible, as more and more police forces are tagging the Dr Signatory on, and this is because so many people are telling porkies about their health, so cannot really blame the police.

The problem come via more and more Dr Surgeries refusing to complete them as they do not like people owing guns... Personal views getting in the way of someone else's life...

My licenses are still not in my possession unfortunately, and I sent them in and paid in September 2020, but fortunately I have been advised by the Police all is approved.

It was the Dr's that dragged it out...
I read you dont need to return your old ones as the "need to buy ammunition and to show lawful possession means that the expiring certificate is not available"... and they should send you a temporary permit in the event of a delayed certificate....

Yes true, but in my situation it was slightly different, my licenses expired due to the time taken by the Dr's, I was given temporary ones from the Police to cover me without any fuss, then they simply sent me an update via email to confirm they had extended them again until the FO could pick up my case.
From the support from the FO / back office staff, if I needed to buy Ammunition - I could have asked for another paper copy, and been given it easily - but I was not in need so didn't ask. All I need do - is send our old expired ones back to them after receiving your new ones.. So I am currently not in possession of paper copies - but I am recorded on their system. Just waiting the new certs to be delivered.

From my dealings, All the issues really do come from the Dr's who are visibly not very happy about having to do these reports and some are becoming millitant abstainers - hence the increasing costs from them and the delays they are causing. The FO's are / have been extremely good from my experience, and I cannot fault them, plus the back office staff being extremely supportive.

A lot of the issues with re-certs / grants - is that people are for some reason trying to hide current and former health issues from the FO's, so they are inadvertantly forcing the Police to use of the Dr's to confirm the health status of individuals, so we see the issues caused by the ones who do not provide accurate history..

They do not differentiate between legally/illegal held firearms in the official statistics

Well, they wouldn't, would they? They just want them all done away with. Remember that demonstration initiated by the Rev, Ian Paisley when he had all his followers flourish their firearms certificates at a public meeting? I bet there were a few in authority wetting themselves then!

The attached is a little analysis I did on rifles (their terminology but means centrefire and excludes air weapons) only for the 12 months to March 2018. As you can see, regardless of whether they were legally owned or not, the numbers are minimal (2 fatalities and 10 injuries) - also note that there is a good chance most of these were self-inflicted!

Compare this to the number of incidents using knifes in the table below and it is quite clear where a doctor's report is more necessary!! ;)

Indeed, the total deaths resulting from firearms is pretty small too, relatively speaking.

Considering the loss of firearms could mean the loss of livelihood with no other proof than a complaint from someone alleging they'd been threatened, the current situation is outrageous.
